I don't quite understand the rise in electricity costs, apparently the UK generates about 40% of its power from renewables so therefore the cost of producing electricity should only be increased on the 60% of non renewables but the electricity costs seem to follow the gas increases percentage wise, the nuclear component also hasn't changed either, so really there should be little or no increase there, unless someone has the actual calculations. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

You forgot Coal, it seems we are going to stop or delay our Coal Fired Generators.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/clos...9608736f01

It won't be long before the government gives someone, possibly someone they know, a large amount of money to build Coal-fired Electric Charging Stations along our motorways.

And yes Electricity has increased in price much more than either petrol or diesel. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Pretty sure the energy cap was never meant to manage the prices of electricity during a boycott of Russian supplied gas. It was devised to stop energy suppliers from fleecing consumers who for whatever reason didn’t shop around for their energy at a time when gas was a major source for heating and cooking and electricity was mainly used for lighting and would not be the biggest part of an energy bill. Renewable energy sources were also not a major part of the supply and were seen as expensive and gas was used to boil water, generating steam to turn turbines generating electricity.
So now we are in the position where electricity is less expensive to generate from renewables which are also a major source but electricity is priced with reference to gas of which there isn’t enough so the gas price is sky high.
That’s my thinking on the situation. I’m just in the process of having a some solar panels and batteries installed.

This article says that EVs will cost more to use than their ICE equivalents.

But for some/most ( I know what which) EV isn’t about just cheaper motoring it’s about the quality and pleasure of driving.

I for one (and Mrs BB) would never go back to an ICE as driving the EV is a much better experience in almost every way.

Loads of ICE drivers poopoo this but too may have never even ridden in one let alone driven one.

We bought ours because we loved it and what it did, nothing to do with cost of running. although that has been a very positive side effect of going EV. Regards

David

Also don’t believe everything you read in the tabloids, most EVs are chargered at home, usually on a cheaper “EV rate” which is way lower than the Rapid Chargers cost they quote in the papers. Something like rapid charge at 50-60p per KWh compared with a home charge of 7.5p per KWh or at most on the average capped cost of presently 28p per KWh. Regards

David

The article was in the telegraph and cost of anything these days cannot be underestimated.
For those who can afford an EV and the subsequent cost to run it must be nice, but most struggle with day to day living costs which will go up again next month so the question is:
if you were in the market for a new car and could buy one for £25k for ice or £40k for EV equivalent despite saving the world by running a battery and you had additional concerns for day to day living costs...which one would it be?

"...EV equivalent despite saving the world by running a battery ..."

EVs wont save the world unfortunately. Most CO2 comes from industry.

But they are nice to drive judging by reports from friends and having driven my FiL's mobility scooter Laughing Jules

There is a slight amount of irony to my post about saving the world.

However, as consumers we are told that the only way of preventing global environmental crisis is for us to adopt EVs!!
Jules you are correct that industry is main polluter but here is the con...buy an EV, pay maybe 30-40% more for it, higher insurance, now higher running costs, due to weight increased wear on tyres (known polluter), more co2 to make and the issue over battery waste.
Oh don't forget how good they are to drive Very Happy

Don't you think this smells a bit like we are being taken for a ride?

Especially as other viable options are not making national TV such as biofuels, hydrogen.

I was impressed by the I-Pace I drove, and I would buy an EV tomorrow - if they were not so expensive.

As far as mobility scooters are concerned, I have bought a lithium lightweight foldable 3 wheeler this year, and its acceleration is impressive.

I would encourage everyone to try out both, as you will be pleasantly surprised. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Always interesting to listen to the Luddites who are still peeved that great-great grandpa had to sell the horses to keep up with the fooled suckers who bought an ICE tractor. Sure the new tractors were quicker and more powerful, but they needed oil and fuel that couldn't be grown on the farm ... and when they broke down you couldn't shoot them ... MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Luddites if I remember history were against new fangled machinery as it was costing jobs/livelihoods and as such smashed up the machinery to prevent it happening - didn't work then either.

Difference here is some of us don't want or can't accommodate electric vehicles, we are not suggesting that they should be smashed up or even banned, just the freedom of choice. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
