Welcome Mr Grumpy Thumbs Up

Xenon HID are vastly superior to the halogen lamps.
Firenze Red is gorgeous but needs a spoiler or it will look like a Post Office van Laughing

I have an SD4 but no real experience of a TD4, get decent test dives in both to satisfy your curiosity.

United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey

Hi everyone. This is my first post here. Bought a new 61 reg Freelander GS TD4 auto in Orkney grey with ebony cloth interior in December 2011 after many years of wanting one. Chose roof spoiler as option and full size spare. Got rubber mats and brolly as part of deal. Listers of Droitwich excellent. Averaged 36.9mpg over first year of really mixed use. First service quoted £397 by Lookers Chelmsford. On haggling they reduced to £320 but still more than Listers £295. Eventually used DS Automotive in Leigh on Sea £266 inc collection and delivery. LR specialists and all original parts etc. Book stamped and warranty honoured. Euro law says so. Only ever use diesel from producers with own refinery eg BP, ESSO, Texaco, Shell. Don't go to petrol station for groceries so why go to supermarket for fuel? So far, car is brilliant, all I expected. One minor rattle when 2 halves of interior mirror separated but clipped it together again and problem solved. Look forward to reading more from other owners.

Barry

Hi Taz,

Thanks for your input & advice. I have read that the Xenons are really good, I'll certainly consider them.
I'll also keep in mind what you said about the spoiler, I hadn't thought of that... Don't want to look like Postman Pat! Laughing

The one salesman I've spoken to as yet says the SD4 is much smoother with the auto box but I'm deffo going to have a drive of both as £1000 is a lot to spend if there's not that much difference.

Cheers! Thumbs Up

I've got a TD4 auto and find it very smooth. Did not test drive SD4 as out of budget so can't compare. It would have to be really much better to warrant the extra.

Thanks Barry,

Good to know you find the TD4 auto very smooth, hopefully will be having my first drive in one in a few weeks time, probably will try both but I just can't see that the SD4 is worth £1000 more!

Welcome Mr Grumpy

With all those extras you might be better just going for the HSE. Then you can be Mr Happy Very Happy

I bought the MY13 XS with extras sun roof, electric seats, arm rest pack, front parking sensors, rear spoiler and mud flaps but now think I should have just gone for the HSE spec as it will be better value when I come to trade in.

Also def go for the Xenons as I have found the halogens to be not great at night particular on dipped beam. Looking at trying a brighter bulb to try and improve it.

Hi Mr Grumpy

Enjoy the test drive. I thought the SD4 was a lot extra too. Also I couldn't understand how extra power and torque quoted on the SD4 came with the same fuel economy figures as the TD4. Science says more power means using more energy faster so how can figures be the same. Let us know what you think when you drive both.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Hi Mr Grumpy.

To echo previous posters comments:

With your choice of extras I'd look seriously at an HSE and compare your XS with extras price to an HSE at same level of specification. When you come to sell an HSE will have better residuals than an XS even with lots of extras.

As to SD4 or TD4, both engines have the same official combined fuel consumption, deliver the same torque. The SD4 will get you from 0 -60 about a second faster than the TD4. I've got a TD4 manual and am very happy with it and its performance and also have an SD4 at work which is a nice drive. My next Freelander will probably by a TD4 auto as I'm still not convinced of the need for an SD4, others will of course, disagree and say the SD4 is the one to have.

Best advice take a test drive in both an SD4 and TD4 and then decide.

Thanks very much for all the input & advice so far. It's all very helpful.

I have considered the HSE & have played about with the configuration on the website & I'm sure the fact about better residuals in the future are correct but I find that the XS with 'cherry picked' options still comes out at a few grand less. I'll have to play about more and also see how receptive the dealer is. Not sure which dealer yet either, Chester, Knutsford, Manchester & Liverpool all easy to get to. Any opinions on dealers greatly appreciated too!

I'm too am also confused about the quoted economy figures being the same for both the TD4 & SD4. Something else I'll have to get them to explain. It'll be interesting to drive both although I'd have to be really impressed to go for the SD4.

I'm certainly looking forward to it all! Very Happy

I got mine from Listers in Droitwich, Worcs. Got a good deal and found them very professional but I know the sales person is not there any more. Son-in-Law just ordered his RRS there so must be good if he has used them. Bit of a trot down M6/5 for you but worth a phone call.

Hi guys and welcome to you all.
Don't get carried away with the MPG figures the LR quote, they don't seem to have any relation to what we actually get. Mind you, it's a land rover, you don't buy one for the economy, you buy one because they are bloody good fun!!
