Whilst among slow traffic auto is king, otherwise manual is fine but would prefer 5 speed over 6 in manual form as I lose count in something as high geared as the Freelander...is it in 3rd or 5th or 4 ...

Seen that happen on blowbacks on petrol engines a few times but not on derv engines, you did mention a small backfire so that is your clue.
