The number of cars I have jumpstart in our street & plugged a few tyres. Amazing how none of the people have had a coronary. & that's their panic that their car has died & not me fixing the problem!

I agree with you, most people have become useless but it is not only the younger ones. A friend of mine, about the same age as me (sorry, I don't like big numbers) had one of his tyres looking like it needed the pressure testing and pumping up, so I mentioned it to him. The following week it was still the same so I reminded him and his reply was that he had the car serviced a few weeks ago and he presumed the garage would have checked it. Did he do anything about it? No. I think he took the attitude that his presumption was safer than correct tyre pressures.

Many years ago, at least 30, a mate of mine used to work in the main Volvo dealers in Bristol UK. A customer brought their Volvo back a week after having it serviced complaining that there was a warning light on the dashboard. It turns out that they’d managed to empty the washer bottle (it had been filled during the service), didn’t know what the light meant (should’ve RTFM), and didn’t know how to open the bonnet to check and top up fluid levels.

Possibly a result of the disposable society?

It's a good comparison. In reality, little has changed with diesels or engines in general over that time period. There's only so much that can be done with an engine, so vehicle aerodynamics are being improved instead. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. About 25mpg with the caravan on the back, we use this as a guide to work out what we’re in for money wise for a holiday. |

I've had several Landies, & when my wife wanted me to sell my Kodiaq, to buy something with an auto-box (as mine's a manual), I looked at a FL2 It's a lot more interesting/'higher population' than the Kodiaq Owners site |

We only have a little van, but admit it drops if doing some where with lumps in the ground. Norfolk not known for its hills.😁 |

With careful driving, 37 MPG around here was possible, but careful driving on a motorway would see over 40 MPG. However working out how much energy is in a gallon of diesel, it's shocking how inefficient the Freelander 2 is. A UK gallon of diesel contains about 45kWh of energy, yet that's only enough for under 40 miles in most cases. This is why there's such a push for more efficient vehicles, both ICE and EV, or combinations of both. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Gone. 2006 Tonga Green i6 HSE.
