Hi newbie here

Hi first time owner of a fl2 and have already had to do the rear shoes and pads after only owning it for a week. So this looks like the place for further help and advice.

Endorse above comment. Please let us know which Freelander 2 you have bought, as it's always helpful when you have a problem. When you come to clean the wheels, you will find a lot more dust on the rear as the bias is to the rear brakes. It's a good idea to keep an eye on the fronts, as I have found they will need replacing soon.

Allan G……..welcome to the site…….as SYFL2 says it’s a great place for help & info…….
As OLOSTEVE says….what FL2 have you…..? Pre EPB equipped since you replaced rear shoes….
I found it strange that OLOSTEVE says thé rear brakes do more braking resulting in more brake dust on rear wheels……..in 13yrs & 162k mls I have found that the front wheels do collect more brake dust…..
…….the pads obviously do more wore work…..they are much bigger…….. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

That was silly wiping your finger over the rims. Now you have ruined that charcoal patina!

If really keen, an air compressor with water venturi.

When I first had my FL2 I was surprised to be changing my rear brakes before the fronts and I decided it was the fact the various stability aids worked by applying the rear brakes individually.

Jules,…….I fully concur also……….the rear pads wear more than thé front….why ? It’s simply because the rear pads are very much smaller……so they wear more quickly…..I think I have replaced the front pads 3 times….the rears four times……in 163k mls………I have a full inventory of work done…..…the h/brake shoes are still original as are ALL the brake discs……..no big grooves visible ………….JLR /Ford should have had bigger calipers /pads on rears but it works ok…….a fairly simple system…..just check the rear pads…. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

There is also the stability control system. That uses the rear brakes.

This was something I looked into quite a lot before putting this video together. It's point number 5 if you'd like to skip to it Smile. But as BossBob has said, it's mainly the stability system doing its thing without the driver even knowing Very Happy.

Though saying that, in 12 years of ownership and 100,000 miles, I only changed all the disc pads once! While I don’t charge up to hazards and apply a lot of braking at the last minute as an ex Ducati rider I do like some spirited driving, but I certainly don’t spend as much time on the brakes as most people do, judging by how much time their brake lights are on and my foot is still on the accelerator.

As BossBob says the FL2 seems to like being driven in a relaxed manner.

I find my Metro Auto responds well to anticipating the road well ahead and allowing the speed to come off naturally. Then gradually apply the throttle early as you round the bend to limit turbo-lag, and then gain your cruising speed quickly (as Dean says in video a bit a full throttle is good for the system).

I have tried the 'Black Finger Test' on the rims and indeed the fronts are throwing off more brake dust than the rears. Having read the comments in this thread I can see that the pad size must be a factor, although I still believe that stability braking is going on mostly unnoticed.

My first FL2 (XL SD4) bought in 2012 needed rear pads and discs at about 25k miles, the small country garage I bought it from told me that the first owner was very enthusiastic and raved about the performance. So I surmised that the stability systems had been well used.

PS
Dean Thats a very handy Video, thanks. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Basically the same for me. The petrol engine is great when needed & it is amazing how 2 tonnes can be pushed around so easily. But 99% percent of the time I take it easy & enjoy the very quite drive with additional acoustic insulation. Probably about the only thing one can hear is some idiot on one wheel on a Ducati!

Brake dust on the front is more than the rear. Rear pads were replaced before the front. The petrol engine model has 316mm front discs. A bit larger than the diesel. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
