It's nice to know how the other half live.

Freelanders don't exist in isolation, so to have a comparision in the "General" section makes some sense to me. As does how motoring in Australia compared to the UK, although I suspect that @Lightwater isn't your average Australian. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Yes I suppose so, but is comparing mpg on a vehicle which came out in 2016 with one from 2006 really meaningful? FL2 SD4 XS 2013 Orkney Grey

The number of cars I have jumpstart in our street & plugged a few tyres. Amazing how none of the people have had a coronary. & that's their panic that their car has died & not me fixing the problem!

There are only two things people are capable of doing these days with cars. That is opening the driver's door (no manners for passenger door) & fuel cap!

A few years ago I was changing the key fob battery, I do it regularly. I noticed a different battery. I ask the mechanic about it. He said we change the battery every service as no one is capable of doing it!

I said you also don't need to check the tyres or water as I can cope with things like that! He said no one else can!

I even had a person have their car fall off the jack. Flat wheel half off. So chocked every wheel. Fortunately with 3 compressors could inflate the tyre quicker than air coming out the side. Then got jack in place.

Everyone has become useless, & it is mostly the younger ones. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I agree with you, most people have become useless but it is not only the younger ones. A friend of mine, about the same age as me (sorry, I don't like big numbers) had one of his tyres looking like it needed the pressure testing and pumping up, so I mentioned it to him. The following week it was still the same so I reminded him and his reply was that he had the car serviced a few weeks ago and he presumed the garage would have checked it. Did he do anything about it? No. I think he took the attitude that his presumption was safer than correct tyre pressures.

Many years ago, at least 30, a mate of mine used to work in the main Volvo dealers in Bristol UK. A customer brought their Volvo back a week after having it serviced complaining that there was a warning light on the dashboard. It turns out that they’d managed to empty the washer bottle (it had been filled during the service), didn’t know what the light meant (should’ve RTFM), and didn’t know how to open the bonnet to check and top up fluid levels.
SWMBO was dropping off her car for a service and the guy dropping his car off before her was having a fuse changed. It was going to cost him £20 to have the fuse for the windscreen wipers replaced because he’d turned the wipers on while they were frozen to the screen by the heavy frost we’d just had.
A lad from down the road from us had a puncture on the rear alloy wheel of his motorcycle. He was able to take off the wheel, but he brought it up for SWMBO (5ft nothing, get blown away in a strong breeze) to take the tyre off the rim, fit a new tube and get the tyre back on without marking the wheel.

Possibly a result of the disposable society?
Rather than have to fix something just get another.

But possibly not, I had two brothers, the youngest one is completely and utterly useless and cannot put up a shelf - well he did but it fell down complete with the orniments that were on it. The other was slightly mad, but had a go, often with interesting results, such as a hydrogen generator for his ancient car, didn't have a cut off switch until I pointed out that it would be a good idea. This split water and fed it into the air intake - often wondered what happened to that car.
Me I was apparently taking things apart from the age of three - as soon as I could reach the cutlery drawer to get a knife to disassemble stuff like a live plug socket!

Maybe it was my fault, if thier bikes were broken I would fix them, so they never learned to fix thier own? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I think this thread has gone off on half a dozen tangents!

I can brink it back on fuel economy... sort of!

We had stopped for a break in the Northern Territory. There was a small group of tourists slowly, very slowly, emptying a 20 litre jerry can into the tank.

The flexible section of nozzle was stuck into the tank & they squirting the fuel into it via the breather in the jerry can.

In a very casual polite manner I said I can fill it a bit quicker for you otherwise it will be dark before you are finished.

I put the nozzle on the jerry can & used the breather for what it was designed for.

Ahhh, that's how it works! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

It's a good comparison. In reality, little has changed with diesels or engines in general over that time period. There's only so much that can be done with an engine, so vehicle aerodynamics are being improved instead. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I did manage 45 MPG indicated on one drive to London, but I was driving like I was driving Miss Daisy. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

About 25mpg with the caravan on the back, we use this as a guide to work out what we’re in for money wise for a holiday.

I've had several Landies, & when my wife wanted me to sell my Kodiaq, to buy something with an auto-box (as mine's a manual), I looked at a FL2

It's a lot more interesting/'higher population' than the Kodiaq Owners site

We only have a little van, but admit it drops if doing some where with lumps in the ground. Norfolk not known for its hills.😁

With careful driving, 37 MPG around here was possible, but careful driving on a motorway would see over 40 MPG.

However working out how much energy is in a gallon of diesel, it's shocking how inefficient the Freelander 2 is.

A UK gallon of diesel contains about 45kWh of energy, yet that's only enough for under 40 miles in most cases.

This is why there's such a push for more efficient vehicles, both ICE and EV, or combinations of both. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
