MOT change.

Whilst having tyres fitted yesterday the guy from the MOT side told me my car will fail the next MOT.
Registration number/letter spacing.
My space is in the wrong place putting my zero next to my letters to make my name (0 views as a D)
The MOT station will in future have to take photographs as proof.

I had already heard about other items that were going to be photographed during the MOT. (Sorry can't remember what it was as it wasn't something that affected me)

As the guy said, it only has to be correct during the MOT, but for me, as I've done a really good job of fitting mine using a full size sticky pad in a frame and no visible screws, if I'm going to bu99er it up for every MOT I might aswell go back to the original plate!

Use sticky pads to temporarily put a regular number plate on top of your regular number plate? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Registration plates have altered character spacing to help buyers spell words they want to spell with their personalised plate. As you can expect, this is illegal, and can land you with an on the spot fine of £100, which could rise to £1,000, as well as a failed MOT and your number plates being seized.

With ANPR cameras everywhere, surely even if you change plates for MOT it will be only a matter of time before a bored traffic cop stops you and fines you. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I think there are far better ways to personalise your car than to have fancy number plates that not only may be illegal but don't really spell out what the owner would like them to say.

Just for your amusement here are a couple of plates from down my street:

B16 NOB - Supposed to read " BIG KNOB". Rather crude and poor spelling.

A bit more subtle:

K8TY'S - With one of the fixing screws made to look like and apostrophe The owner is a lady who's name is Katy.

Edited for typo

l had a plate on old Discovery 50th Anniversary (300Tdi/manual), it was perfect, without alteration/respacing
(the Discovery was already a 'S plate')

Ramsden Road, north of HolmeMoss (now downgraded, authorised vehicule access only)

That was px'd for a Defender 110Td5 (a 'Heritage'), & the plate crossed over
LadyBower Reservoir, in the distance (Shatton Moor?, from memory)

Sadly, I let the plate go, when l sold the 110

I used to get excited about "personal" plates, but that was many years ago when I had money. I even remember people looking for "DPM" plates (diplomatic) in the 70's as you didn't get parking tickets!

Here in France, the problem doesn't exist, as the numberplates are allocated by the state and remain with the car throughout it's lifetime. No messing about with names and places. To be honest, it's easier.

Also, numberplates here have to be permanently attached. Pop rivets are sold pre-coloured to match the white (front and rear) backgrounds. No removable screws or you won't pass the CT (French MOT). I've known someone with a stick on plate fail his CT until he added pop rivets! Life is an uphill struggle. Only the gradient varies.

Mis spaced number plates annoy me.
There's an entire thread with thousands of posts on Pistonheads called "what crappy plates have you seen"
Most of them look tragic, people trying, and failing, to alter numbers and letters to make something that vaguely resembles what ever they are trying to say. Adding screws and the like to alter digits just looks tragic. Police can send a report to the DVLA who can rescind your registration number and issue another age related one. This needs to be done more often.
I do like personalised plates though, all 4 of us in our immediate family have L444*** plates with our initials, not mis spaced not extreme just something a little personalised. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Bobupndown : I don’t like the mis-spaced number plates that can’t be read easily……lots of people get away with it……..& thé DVLA have made a fortune out of the sales….only for the government to waste the money………..I have 2 ‘proper’ Cherished Numbers…..from cars registered in the 1950’s…..bought in ‘70’s….
had to MOT cars & transfer the plates………

Argos69 : You are right that it’s simpler in France with the new system…..before if any owner changed address…..departmental he/she had to apply for a new number plate with the new departmental number at the end. À massive amount of paperwork…..! So they changed the system so that the car kept the allocated registration for life…..like thé UK system. Thé departmental suffix isn’t obligatory….or necessarily correct. I have spoken to lots of car owners with 2A or 2B on their cars,…..( Corsica)…asked where they were from……usually Paris…….!
If the car has the old number plate system & then is sold….or if you import a car from abroad (UK for instance) you will get a new latest reg. number plate…….so you can’t tell how old à car is from it’s number plates…….if it looks new & you are ‘au courant’ with the latest prefix……….currently late H…..HW /HX may be JA……you can tell. But a 10 year old re-registered car will have new similar number also.
Outside of Paris no one is bothered…….a car is a car……..not a status symbol…….that’s what I find. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
D2 TD5 HSE Man MY 1999 470kmls….gone 2014 ….lovely engine..chassis rotten

As I was pulling out of a carpark today, I spotted a Dark Blue RRS SV pulling in with this numberplate.
