This is the kind of news that makes me wonder if the EV path is going to be slower and longer than the government (and society?) has planned.

Battery technology is advancing all the time, so it wouldn't be long until more energy dense chemistries come along. We already have chemistries that allow 3000 plus cycles or more with little degradation, so more energy density batteries will come.

Had a go in a friend's new Model Y yesterday. It was a lovely driving experience. Plenty of carrying capacity. My friend has it as a company car because of the tax situation and the Tesla charging system, which he says is the best by far . He charges at home and occasionally on the public Tesla chargers. He was a Volvo man previously and feels its not as well made as the Volvo but is pretty good.

The battery powered aircraft has one big problem which is constant battery weight. By comparison a conventional plane gets lighter as the fuel is used up and which is factored into the usable range. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Inevitable as some of the supply issues that were propping up used values fall away. 2 year old Polestar 2 can be had for £30k with modest miles, which seems about right once you strip away the covid premium.

I'm glad the prices of used EVs are dropping. I've seen locally (prices in Cornwall are always higher) than the Gen2 Nissan Leaf is loosing money particularly quickly. I've seen 3 year old Gen2s with under 15k on the clock sale for under £15k, which is about ½ the new price.

I can remember when we discussed the Fisker Ocean EV as a viable EV replacement for the FL2. I did not realise that Fisker has since gone bankrupt. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/the-ev...&ei=21 FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011) FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 82k+ miles) (MY2015) Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History (Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?) |

Case closed as to the viability of these vehicles. |

You can hardly call one EV company with a history of bankruptcy going bankrupt again, case closed for EVs. Yes the Fisker Ocean looked good on paper, but it was already out of date before it was rushed to market, which was it's downfall. I've not been on here for a while, and in that time have taken delivery of an EV as our family car. We've had our Ioniq 5 for over a year, and can say that EV motoring nothing like as bad as people claim. It's easy to do long distances in it, no range anxiety or anything like that. Charging is easy, and not expensive if the correct chargers are used. However public charging is the exception rather than the norm for us. We charge at home most of the time, for the equivalent of 2 pence per mile, which is a tiny amount compared to the Freelander the Ioniq 5 replaced. The Ioniq 5 is a perfect replacement for the Freelander 2, being just as spacious, actually more so in the back, and has a decent boot too, as well as being able to tow a sensible amount. I'm now looking for a second EV to replace the other daily driver, but it doesn't need to be large or have more than 100 miles range. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Gone. 2006 Tonga Green i6 HSE. Gone. Audi A5 convertible, the daily driver. 1972 Hillman Avenger GT, the project. |

The depreciation on some new EVs is so high that one that is 2 or 3 years old seems an interesting prospect. Jules |

Yes, some of the models are depreciating at the same rate as some luxury ICE vehicles. It's not uncommon for expensive ICE vehicles to loose ⅓rd to ½ their purchase price in 3 years, and some EVs are following this trend. The VW ID3 and 4 are loosing over 50% in 2 years, which is ok if you're in the market for one of them.
