Freelander 2 Halogen headlamps - importing to France

Hi all,

I've bought a 2010 Freelander 2 HSE with halogen headlamps. I want to import it to France, where it needs not to dazzle other drivers whilst driving on the right. Stickers are no use as it has to comply during it's first CT (MOT equivalent).

I seem to remember some clever person once posting about a "simple" modification that allowed the beam pattern to become flat, which would suffice.

Does anyone have any clues or ideas about such a thing?
My build sheet says:
Headlamps - Design - With Halogen Headlamp (064DE)
Headlamps - Type - Headlamps - RH Asymmetry (064BY)
Headlamp Levelling Type - With Manual Headlamp Levelling (064DA)
Auto Headlamps - With Auto Headlamps (064CY)

As always, ideas and suggestions are welcome.
(I know I can go out and buy some LHD lamps, but that feels like it might be expensive!)

I'm guessing the silence means nobody knows!

Does anyone know of any (sensibly priced) suppliers of LHD headlamps? I've started researching this, but if there's a "source" that anyone knows, I'd be most grateful for the advice.
Suffice to say that LandRover want an arm and two legs for new ones!

No, it just means that a user/owner member of this forum, not a company helpdesk, who does know, hasn’t logged on in the day that you’ve had the post up.

Car breakers often put spare partss on ebay. driving on the right side

Doing a search on our website the headlamps should from my understanding have a "tourist leaver" to change the beam pattern for LHD. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi all,

Nope, never considered this a helpdesk, just thought I was maybe asking for something abnormally abstract.

Sadly no "tourist lever" on mine, but it wouldn't have helped me. The French have become even more bureaucratic (if you can imagine that!) than before. I've just found out now, they're not accepting flat beam modifications or switched lights for import purposes. No, they want LHD headlamp units! If they don't find them on your car, they insist on you getting the work done by an "approved" garage/dealer. 1300 euros has been bandied about as a possible cost if they insist on a French LR dealership doing it. So I'm now trying to stop their daylight robbery by swapping the lights in advance.

Thank the lord my speedo shows MPH and KPH as that's another gotcha apparently!

Oh, well, if it was easy.....

My 2014 SD4 came with halogen lights ( the troublesome single HB3 system).

However my owners manual specifically says this on page 39...

"HEADLAMPS - DRIVING ABROAD
The headlamp beam pattern is suitable for driving on either side of the road. There is no need for any mechanical adjustment or external decals."

Im guessing as yours had no adjusting lever then this also applies to you.

That's interesting that my book states:

'When new, the lever will be set to the correct position for the country in which the vehicle is sold.'

I had a look at the headlamps on my car & there is no leaver for changing sides of road, even though it's noted in the manual.

Here is the beam pattern of the halogen bulbs on my car:

@ lightwater
My single halogen HB3 light unit uses the same projector reflector as the HID and uses a shutter for dipping the lights - maybe thats is the difference. Im assuming your lights are different of course. Jules

Thank you all for your input.

Seems there are many variations (and sub-variations?) of these headlights. Swapping projectors or filing the shutters (my plan 'A') doesn't look promising now, as I'm being told those cheeky French inspectors are looking at the arrow markings on the lights themselves and basing their failure criteria on that!

I will search the world for some headlights and fit them. I shall update this sorry saga with any info. that may help someone else. Even if it turns out to be "Whatever you do, never ever import a car into france after Brexit!".

Hope you all have a good weekend.

My car uses the HB3 halogen globe.
The light pattern (in the link) is about 0.5 metres in front of the car. I purposely did that to map the light.

I think the problem with all modern headlights, is that they are all effectively a "point" light. A tiny source of light. Whereas old cars had large reflectors & this provides a better softer light.

A bit like ceiling down lights, dreadful sharp lighting. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

On this eebsite there are a lot of Freelanders from 2010 onwards being broken for parts.

You can always message likely contenders to see what's available and whether they will post within EU. They will likely speak English or just Google Translate.

Beware though many of the cars are RHD imports from UK so check the photos.

Mine is a MY2013 with HB3 single bulb set up and my handbook is the same as Lightwaters. There was no lever on the original halogen units. I then swapped to HID units from a Metropolis and these also have no lever. Has anybody seen these mythical levers ? FL2 SD4 XS 2013 Orkney Grey

The levers were installed in the cars when the shift team comprised of a mermaid & a unicorn! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
