Update:

It's all working...ish.

Spent all day yesterday on it...
Firstly I did the proper hard reset, for what it was worth. Both battery leads off and shorted together.
Placed the battery on a medium rate charge.
Then had the undertray off and found the F1 diode and replaced that.
Replaced undertray.
Replaced battery leads.
Still -all response apart from the stereo touch screen, clock and horn.

Decided to download all L359 AS-BUILT config files and Calibration files for SDD. Took about an hour.
In SDD at no point did I need to enter engineering mode.
Loaded and worked on Saturday's SDD session.
Ran another scan to try and locate BCM/RFA software version issues:

As you can see below the BCM seems corrupt but the KVM seems OK:

Didn't go into the Recommendation tab but worked through the Extra's tab instead:

Ran the "Body systems - Body Control Module primary bootloader update" first.
Said it was OK:

Then proceeded through the "Configure Existing Module" options, starting with the BCM, then the KVM and then from top to bottom on the above list.

A couple of modules said they were already up-to-date but guided me through downloading over the top and calibrating anyway (2x Doors and HVAC). The KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module) failed the first time due to a comms error, but I think that was due to the wife starting her Jeep parked right next to me; it worked fine the second time.

The rest downloaded and configured first time.

Note that during the whole process I had a 95A Sealey Start 560 Garage battery charger connected and set to it's highest power output.

On a couple of occasions I would receive a comms error because the Start button could not power the ignition on:

I proceeded regardless and the install worked OK.

It's a real PITA long-winded process because after each and every download, SDD asks you to clear and then re-read the DTC's.

At the end of the process both of my 2x existing keys still wouldn't work. So I ran the Extras - "Security - recover programmed keys" procedure. This process then has to be followed by the Service Functions - "Add additional keys" procedure. Both procedures are a bit of a faff, you have to press the unlock button within 5 seconds of pressing a button on screen and sometimes it's a bit laggy so you press twice and it errors. Just retried it and all worked OK.

It does mention that you need an existing Key to add a new one but I just selected 2x new ones and it worked fine:

Finally re-ran the DTC clear and read and got:

As you can see the RCM (Restraints Control Module) has detected that my pre-tensioner is fubar and that the DSM (Drivers Seat Module) still needs programming to talk to the BCM (Body Contol Module) and DCM (Door Control Module). {I put the full acronym names in to help with external searches}.

The Wiper relay issues I sorted by pulling and reseating them all and putting F22 in the correct socket

No idea what the RFA DTC is but it doesn't seem to be causing an issue for now

The driver info screen was still saying EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) not functional and had a warning for the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) on every wheel but both these all cleared when I took it out for a run. I assume they need to be dynamically calibrated.

So...I'm back where I started.

Got her MOT on Thursday so going to put the OE manual seat back in for that and look at changing the pre-tensioner to the electric seat and re-fit it next weekend.

there are 2 sides to this
1. Unless mistakes are made how do people find out what works and what doesn't and how to fix things so good effort on this.
2. leave this sort of stuff well alone and let the experts with decent liability insurance play with the laptops so if they brick it totally they can afford to get all the ECU replaced or buy you a new car.... unless you have very deep pockets yourself of course.

and as a side note

sounds like you had a lucky escape

all just my own personal opinion of course

So the BCM was in bootloader mode, not the KVM.
I believe that configure existing module on BCM solved it.
And then, reprogramming / relearning the keys finalized it, as the BCM, FWIK, is the repository for the keys.

Although I do agree with RogB that without breaking stuff we'd never learn how to fix them. Same applies to the mechanical side too...

Thats what I thought too. One question for you though Alex, as the IPC was the active session when I did the repair, will the config automatically replicate back to the BCM so that it has a working backup?
