Do it yourself.

Gates kit less than £90, locking kit approximately £27.
No other special tools required other than a good socket set and some spanners.
Also required plenty of tea or coffee of your choice.

Did mine last summer. No big deal, just requires patience. Thumbs Up

Which locking kit do you recommend ?
There are lots on ebay; some multi-purpose kits and some very simple ones.

Hi Jules sorry for the late reply, been trying to do the glow plugs.

The locking kit I used was made by sealy, purchased of eBay. Two pins, one short one long with a right angle on it and a bracket that locks the flywheel after removing the starter motor. I think is £31 now. Sorry I can't upload a photo but it just will not work on this tablet.
Hope that helps.

Just seen the post from Badger21. That's the kit I used. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Having taken all the skin off my knuckles last weekend changing the EGR cooler, I'm now looking for a shopping list to prepare to replace the water pump and timing belt. I've already ordered the sealey timing locking tool. Does the crank pulley bolt need to be replaced? I can see that lots of you have been successful in doing this job and would like to draw on your experience.
The cost of "genuine" land rover kit looks ridiculous albeit having been caught out putting britpart water pumps on both TD4 and TD5 before, I am unwilling to be too tight with my parts. I'm planning to replace the serpentine / auxiliary belt while I'm at it. Grateful if anyone can recommend a list of parts and possible suppliers. Thanks in advance for your help. If you purchase a Gates kit you get the the cam belt, water pump, tensioner pully and crank bolt.
The crank pully is very tight and will fight to the very last thread but don't be tempted to use any kind of impact gun to remove it.
I used an extendable ratchet and an extension on the socket resting on an axel stand, this took some of the effort out of holding it onto the crank bolt.
Hope this helps. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

I used an air impact gun on mine. Don’t know of any other mechanics that would wind that out by hand. Whistle Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Yep, impact gun all the way, could understand that statement if we were talking about stainless steel ( firing up ).

Regards impact gun.
I'm only going off what I read in the manual. It says do not use impact gun as damage may occur.

If you have used it with no problems that's fine. I'm just following the book. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

You need a torque multiplier for removing the crank bolt. It makes the job so easy.

Which make torque multipler did you use? Been looking at these as I am going to do my timing belt in the next week or so, I thought I would get one with a 1/2 drive and a 400nm + range then if needed could do the wheel bearings as well

I was lucky to get one cheap off ebay a good few years ago. Used it on three cars so now has paid for it's self. it's a Norbar 15 to 1. However I imagine any of the ones on e bay will do
