Cam belt change time?

I'm looking at a couple of FL2s - both around 10 years old and with 80,000 or so on the clock. I'm going to view them this weekend. Should I be concerned about needing a cam belt change in the near future and what should I say to the dealers?

Many thanks for any comments. Ian.

At 10 years old, if it hasn't been done, then request cambelt and water pump change as a condition of purchase.. Steve

When i was looking most dealers would have done the cambelt change if i wanted them (and i hadn't already been done) but don't then expect them to move on price too) Smile

You can request they do the belt change & they will probably agree to do it, if they do carry out the work is another matter Whistle

Many thanks.

I do wonder whether it might be better to use this to knock the price down a bit and have the work done myself. What sort of price might I expect to pay at an independent workshop? Ian.

Just had my Sd4 done, and a Renault Modus, both about £630 each, at independent but renowned shops. I know that's more than other parts of the country, but this is Surrey and the main dealers wanted £900.

Cobbet1, does that price include pulley tension roller and water pump? If not, then they are robbing you...dealers have fixed price repairs and servicing for vehicles 3+ years, and the belt on its own is £300 and something at a main dealer IIRC.

If it helps anyone out, I'm in Hampshire and have just had the cam belt and water pump done on my 2013 SD4 (60k miles). I shopped around all over the south and got loads of different prices (these are all inc VAT):

Smile Servicing Portsmouth £370.00
Inchcape Land Rover Southampton £395.00
MTS 4x4, Alton £413.04
New Forest 4x4 £404.95
Regal Autosport Southampton £599.00
Guy Salmon Portsmouth £395.00
Chichester 4x4 £398.40
R and E Land Rover Specialists £631.70
More 4x4 Ltd £735.50
Harwoods Land Rover Basingstoke £1,072.79

Guy Salmon and Inchcape LR both quoted £395 on the JLR fixed price servicing plan, which is actually pretty reasonable, though it wasn't clear whether this included water pump as well as the belt.

In the end I went with MTS 4x4 as they did me a good price on the above plus a full standard service and a Haldex service. But AC Land Rover in Horndean are well regarded, so worth getting in touch with Ashley there too.

p.s. I don't know what on earth Harwoods Basingstoke are doing - they should be quoting on the JLR fixed price plan for FL2s but their prices seem to be completely random.

I asked for a price on timing belt, tensioner, idler, water pump and ancillary drive belt replacement (which as far as I'm concerned is what 'having the belt done' should entail) and that's the eye-watering price they came back with!

There pricing does seem a bit random, was quoted the fixed £395 price for the belt but as I said not sure if that includes the water pump

Its maybe worth clarifying with the dealer exactly what your getting. We know dealers the hourly rate at a dealer is huge, so to do it for £395 inc VAT, on a 3 hour job, they must be shaving costs elsewhere...

A full Cambelt kit inc water pump is £295.70 inc VAT

A belt kit alone, inc tensioner and idler pulley is 157.91

A timing belt alone, with no extras, is £66.07

I'll let you guys decide where they are cutting corners Whistle

BTW, I've used JLR retail prices, as it's a fair comparison for a main dealer

I bought a genuine Kit including the water pump from Peugeot dealer (gave them a VIN of a peugeot 508 2,2 HDI)

2400 Moroccan dirhams inc VAT ( ~ 195 GBP) ... more than 400 GBP from LR dealer

same kit, same supplier
