Do you loose the differential oil when you take the entire haldex out to service it?

No.  FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.
RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone

I'll go a bit further, when you replace the diff oil it has no effect on the Haldex unit fluid either.

Well I bought all the parts (Volvo filter kit, case O-ring, shaft O-ring&nut) and intended to remove, disassemble and clean it today...

Only got as far as the first prop shaft bolt... the head snapped clean off with modest torque after a few turns. I could have tried the other bolts but if I broke them too then I'd have several choices:

1) Try to extract the broken bolt(s) from the haldex flange. The ones with red loctite.
2) If that didn't work, then I'd have top buy a new haldex shaft/flange thingy. If that's even available.
3) Or get it towed to the shop.

Decided just to drive it to the shop with five good bolts still in. He has better technology to deal with stuck bolts and loctite, and he can service the haldex while it's out. Oh well, maybe I'll get to do it next time.

I was just going to apply new loctite and re-use the flange bolts. But the heads actually looked pretty well worn... the dealer had it off several times trouble-shooting a leak a couple years ago and I'm guessing they just kept re-using the same bolts

So I think a lesson learned would be use new flange bolts every time and apply penetrating oil several times over several days before removal, just to be safe.

Hi guys it would be really helpful for everyone if next time someone fills their haldex correctly they could check the oil level with a alan key. This would helpful for refilling and also handy for just checking the level. regards Steve

Yep. The same as new engine oil shows up on a dipstick.

sorry Steve D Allen key, I find black ones are best. Save getting oil ready just to find oil is level with bung ( conventional level bung ) regards Steve J
