Argh! Swirl flaps!

Ok so what I thought may have been an injector issue has turned out to be a LOT worse. Swirl flaps have been ingested into two cylinders and caused damage. Really dont know what direction to go in now. Recon engines are a minefield interms of finding a reputable company that doesn't require a mortgage. If I get the valves, head gaskets and timing belt fitted apparently it may still run rough. Then there's the unknown with turbo...
Absolutely gutted and confused. Anyone with any real experience that could impart their knowledge will be greatly appreciated. I feel wine and beer is the only answer right now!

Thanks Bobbyg. Did the damage look similar? Still trying to decide on recon engine or repair... Can get an engine for £1450 with fitting on top. Have you had your swirls blanked?

Were the swirls flaps metal ? The ones on my 07 were plastic, anecdotal evidence seems to suggest they don't seem to do any damage if they go in, they just melt.

Think they are plastic but there is visible damage. I could chance it that the rods haven't bent and hope compression is ok. Only had the car a week! No signs up until it happening. Risks you take buying private eh?!

Never got to see the head ,not sure if the new manifold is the old or later type.ie with or without the flaps.as my son owned the car at the time of the rebuild.one thing he did not have done at the time was the glow plugs.if it was mine at the time I would have done it.is there a part no cast in the manifold to show which one it is.if so what's the part no for the new no flaps type.

Not nice.

Was it a bang and stop dead situation ? or noise and still ran albeit with a misfire ? or bad noise and ran on with no misfire ?

If it stopped dead its about the possibility of a con rod being damaged. otherwise there may be hope but will of course cost something be it a scrap head or a full head service.

If its about running rough due to loss of compression its also whether there is a hole in a piston as well or its limited superficial damage. The head that may be salvageable. Valves out and valve seats inspected, valve faces re-cut and new seats fitted where needed all ground in. Put all valves in a drill to spin to see if bent and possibly just new valves to any pots with a great deal of visual damage.

We used to turn heads over and fill with paraffin to check for hairline head cracks, that test is only OK once seats and valves are back in good contact with seats, you could do it to the bores to see if a piston is holed, see if one leaks away much more quickly than any other. It will always leak away very slowly past the rings of course.

Clean up any high spots of damage to stop it running hot. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi Yorky. Went to see the head today. Two valves are bent and there's a huge gap between one where the swirl flap has got wedged. Some tough plastic! Bit the bullet and ordered a remanufactured engine to be fitted later this week. Ironic how I got shot of the FL1 because it was always costing me money. This one has surpassed that in less than a month vs 5 years!

Sad. Big Cry and a timely wake up call for some.

Some further detail on your "new" engine would be good once fitted. How much re-manufacturing is done and by whom as it sounds interesting. I assume it comes with a new cam belt and water pump so its one job you save on if not already done before this disaster. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Bit the bullet and bought it from VEGE. Hoping it's a good un. Remanufactured so has to better than the fly by night's that are all too prevalent on the net. Time will tell I guess...

Will update you all once arrived and fitted though. Ordered an inlet manifold from LR Parts too so will give a review on that.

I saw something like this on a Massey Ferguson X35 tractor years ago where a piston ring had broken up and somehow the bits got on top of the piston and rattled their way out of the engine and damaged the vales on the way out. It took a lot of grinding paste and an electric drill to get the valve seats smooth but it all worked OK afterwards. What does the tops of the pistons look like? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
