HDC problems - Starting issues - Extra Earth Lead Fix

Well, well, well

Glad to see on the new model now LR have now been fitting an extra earth strap from the battery to the starter bolt on the bell housing as standard factory fit !

Strange but true Thumbs Up

only on yours OG, LR read this forum too, an urgent message was sent by carrier pigeon to halewood, insisting that your car be so equipped,.. the extra cost of this? nothing they saved the cash by fitting one less bearing in the rear diff

so reliable electronics and as an added bonus no bearing to whine and fail , its a win win At work

Interesting.... I'm considering it my self not due to start up probelms ( at the moment ) but I think the same issue is having an effect on my radio. Some times when starting after not been used for a bit the amp will not power up right so I get no sound. Solution turn the CAR off and retry.

I've tried the old key in and wait a few seconds and that does not always do it - I've also left the key in ( ie getting fuel ) and the problem still exisits.

My thought ( apart from naff software ) is voltage issues... I also get HDC disabled EVERY startup...

Earth Strap

The extra Earth Strap is so cheap to fit and so easy to install.
It should be the first 'accessory' any new Freel2 owner should buy
No queries, no questions, no searching the forum; its a case of just do it..........fit and forget!
Clipped to the side engine harness with black tywraps it just looks OE

Ah well that answers my question then. Think this has to be an idea that's worth trying given it costs virtually nothing and might just prevent issues and problems in the future.

Part Number

Do you have the LR part number for the strap by any chance?

Extra earth strap

It's not a LR part.
Go to one of the smaller independent car accessory shops. They will sell you a length of black battery cable and crimp on connectors. I crimped the connectors on carefully with mole grips then using a blow torch warmed up the tip to enable me to infeed electrical solder to guarantee long term conductivity, (copper does oxidise and go black over time).
Measure the length before you go to buy, I seem to remember 1 metre being plenty enough.
Kind regards from Fred

After reading this I thought it was worth a go on my 2012.

I obtained a 76cm strap from Halfrauds for £5.69 and attached one end to the battery and the other to the Auto gear box.

Thumbs Up

Is that a prefab strap ?

As I have a manual I'm looking at reaching the alternator but I do not know the length I need.

Pretty sure the odderties I'm seeing are either this or a duff battery ... that said they alternator does look newish which makes me think it was on here before I bought it....

Earth problem and earth strap

Please may I recommend that the proper choice for the engine end of the new auxiliary earth strap should be one of the two starter motor bolts.
.
Whether you car is a manual or auto has no relevance. It is the starter that takes a high current amperage thus risking voltage drop and throwing strange effects to HDC warnings etc.
.
The photo location above which uses a convenient threaded hole on an auto box is still taking the earth to a secondary gearcase which is gasketed (insulated?) from the bell housing, so whilst a fair choice it's not the best location.
.
Taking the earth to the alternator only is still a number of components away from the real 'amps eater' which is the starter motor.
.
Hope this helps, kind regards from Fred.
PS I'm still looking for a passenger sidestep good or bad. 2010GS Auto ex Celeb, Santorini Black, 2011 facelift , spoiler, spats, mudflaps, LED footwell lamps, Witter detach,

Are there any pictures of the land rover fitted strap? If they are factory fitting them surely they must have a part number?

it seems strownrow had to snip the eye open to fit it over the earth bolt. not a big problem but a slighty larger eye would be better.

as its an extra earth it shouldnt be taking full current so better than none at all At work
