2007 FL2 Automatic gearbox failure. Help!

My 2007 TD4 automatic has big problems with gearchanges. The gearbox can not find the gears and I will not look up. The box just slip when It tries to change gear! "Transmission Failure" is also shown on the dashbord.

Can anyone help me?

The cars VIN nr is H028526

That message on the dash has been generated by an error stored in the gearbox ECU.
You must go to the dealer/workshop for a dignose and to have the error codes read.
Following that, you/they will know what to do next...

There was a limited number of FL2, generally East European ones, that have a problem with TCC.
It is possible that others to have the same problem.

2007 Failiure too !

Hi -

Just joined the forum as my Wifes FR2 has died.


Symptoms are similar to above - The wife's FR is 57 Plate 2.2 Auto.
Ex Demonstrator, with full LR service history, now 4 yr 2 mo old on 51,000 Miles.

We were away at the weekend and whilst away the "Transmission Fault" message came up on the screen.
It would reset if Turned off and restarted etc, but would pop back up on the screen.
100 miles later (on the way home) it hunted for 5th and then promptly died - stopping the engine whilst I was in the outside lane of the M1.

Rolled to the hard shoulder and restarted to find the gear selector moved, but drive would not engage.

We have had the car towed back to our LR dealer, who has told me the G/Box is knackered and a new one required.

£3,266.


Thoughts ? I accept it is out of Warranty, but surely a sealed for life box, not even needing an oil change for 150k should not implode at 50,000 miles?

LR don't really want to know about helping out.
Everyone says its highly unusual - to me , it highly expensive !!!

VIN number is SALFA23B77H038121
So does not seem to be in the categories above. any other bright ideas whilst I keep / start trawling.....

I am not suggesting you buy this or even suggest this is the problem but the symptoms you describe are very similar to what is in this listing.

Go to another independent gearbox specialist and have him take a look.
In general, the problems in an autobox are generated by the valve block and/or the oil filter being clogged with particles from the clutches/brakes inside.
It is possible, depending on the malfunction, that a box overhaul to be a lot less expensive than the dealer quote to you.
Too bad that you didn't asked for the error codes read from the box in order to post them here and have a look...

So - I have been offered 33% Goodwill gesture.

I am saying, yes, fair enough but I WANT to keep the borked box.
Firstly to have it inspected, and see if I have a better claim for its collapse - or not -
Secondly to have it refurbed in due course and then flog it.

LR won't allow and say the £3,266 is essentially for an "Exchange" unit.

I still want an indy to look at it and give a report on the damage, but I don't know what I can do if I prove it to be a £20 part that has died (potentially) causing the £3k exchange / bill.

Any advice?

Now, based on the costs that will be involved to transport/tow the car to an indy, have him look at it and give you an estimate cost of the repair, you can decide which path to take, in order to solve the problem.
You don't have anything to loose if an indy looks at it before LR start to works on it...
And nor can anyone have anything to say about this course of action, as the car is out of warranty.

It is / has crossed my mind.
But I need to go get a trailer, pull it out of the LR workshop etc.
So far Indy's I have rung have not shown much enthusiasm for it at all - most saying they have never done one.

It is just making my teeth itch that it is a Full swap job, yet might only be component past that is faulty

The prefix (P) means Powertrain
The (0) means generic (1....) would mean specific
The (7) means transmission

P0730 - Incorrect gear ratio
P0733 - Gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0734 - Gear 4 incorrect ratio
P0741 - Torque converter clutch circuit performance or stuck off
P2733 - Transmission fluid pressure solenoid F - solenoid stuck on


Now all we need is Alex to come along and interpret them but it is looking like you may only have a solenoid stuck on with no damage Thumbs Up

But the B'stard problem is that LR are not interested / can't tackle the workings or innards of the G/Box

Indeed, as EYorkshire said, it is possible that the valve block to have some problems.
For sure the solenoid for clutch 1 has a problem (P2733) because, from your description, the box hunted for the 5th at one moment.
This is because the C1 solenoid is engaged for all 1-2-3-4 gears and disengaged for 5 and 6.
Normally when changing 4-5, the pressure through it drops to almost 0 and if not disengaged, at the next 5-4 change the pressure could rise over the maximum and stall the engine. Which also happened.

Also the TCC (torque converter clutch) solenoid is a NC solenoid (normally closed). Meaning the TCC is not locked by default.
Now, on a 2-3 change, almost imediatelly after the change, the TCC solenoid is opened and locks the converter. If you pay attention, you almost have the impression that the box changed to 4, but no, the TCC is engaged and the RPM drops slightly. It's almost funny because the car gain speed/is pulling but the RPM is droping.
If the TCC's solenoid is not opening, then there is no TCC lock and then the expected ratio in 3rd gear is not meet. You'll feel a slight flare in 3rd gear. Therefore P0733.
The same on a 3-4 change. Hence P0734.
(On the same note, this was the place where Q106 acted...)

An incorrect gear ratio is when, based on a certain ratio given by the current gear, for a certain input speed, a certain output speed is expected on the output shaft.
Of course, on an automatic a slight variance is allowed, given by the slip in the torque converter, but this in a certain range. If this range is exceeded, an error is thrown.
The P0730, P0733, P0734 and P0741 go hand in hand because of the P0741 error.

Below is what can be said about the errors.
Try to repair the box to an indy as repair kits are available. And it will be more cheap.

P0730 - Incorrect gear ratio
The transmission control module has detected that the transmission has the incorrect gear ratio.
Slip too high between input and output shaft speeds.
Transmission fluid level low.
Check the transmission oil level and quality.

P0733 - Gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0734 - Gear 4 incorrect ratio
Gear ratio error. Note: If a shift solenoid failure diagnostic trouble code is also flagged, correct shift solenoid diagnostic trouble code first.
Incorrectly regulating solenoid.
Transmission fluid level low - Check and correct oil level.
Transmission components worn causing low system fluid pressure and slip.
Mechanical failure - In the transmission.
Inconsistent gear ratio. If the calculated gear ratio is outside the allowable range, the transmission control module changes to a substitute gear. The transmission control module logs a diagnostic trouble code and waits until the nominal gear equals the substitute gear. It then attempts to change back to the faulty gear. No further action will be taken if the faulty gear is OK. The diagnostic strategy involves checking the wiring to the speed sensors. Check the operation of the transmission in all gears for possible mechanical failure

P0741 - Torque converter clutch circuit performance or stuck off
Slip too high at torque converter clutch
Check the transmission oil level and quality
High contact resistance in the connector terminals
Open circuit - Shift lock/unlock circuit - Lock up control solenoid
Failure - Shift lock/unlock - Lock up solenoid
Shift lock/unlock - Stuck in closed position
Check for high contact resistance in the connector terminals between the transmission control module and transmission

P2733 - Transmission fluid pressure solenoid F - solenoid stuck on
Shift lock C1 pressure control - Not engaged in drive
Shift lock C1 pressure control solenoid - Jammed
