I think you have however done very well to get a 50% contribution on a what appears to be a Non Land Rover repair job????

Thank you! Yes I thought about pushing for more, I would have had the work done under warranty had I received that letter, the dealership (since been taken off them I believe) insisted they'd tried to contact me by text!!! I've settled for this amount as the thought of a long, expensive court case, due to past experience with another vehicle! kind of put me off!! Enclosing a copy of that sample letter I believe was a great help!

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to put a summary thus far regarding my problem as it may help other people in claiming against the dealer/LR for their gearbox problem.

**First of all check if the Q106 Service Action has already been applied, as if it hasn't you can argue that had it been done, you would not be having these problems (thats what i did).

**Secondly don't beleive anything the front desk service people say, I had to aruge constantly until I was upgraded to the service manager who actually started to help. This took about 3-4 phone calls, each time i contested that when she said, "It's nothing to do with Q106" it was a lie.

**If you've purchased the car off a dealer, whether it be a specific land rover dealer (mine was Guy Salmon) or otherwise, the sale of goods act would apply to them. They tried to fob me off by giving me Land Rovers phone number but my contract is with the dealer, not Land Rover. You need to keep reminding them about this or they go quiet. I aimed my letter at the dealer principal and got a reply pretty much straight away.

**Persistance is the key to battling out a decent deal on the gear box front. Mine went from firstly being quoted £3200 + VAT, to arguing for 6 days and then being quoted £600 inc VAT for a new gearbox and all fitting. I've accepted this (because I currently dont' have a car) but am going to claim this money back through the sale of goods act.

Not sure if this info is a massive amount of help but it worries me that some people might just pay the £3800 which is ridiculous!

If i hear anymore through Land Rover then i'll let everyone know!

Out of interest, out of all of you with auto gearbox trouble, are there any patterns in usage or the way the car has been driven that could explain the failiures - or at least point to a weak spot?

For example;

do you mostly drive short journeys with lots of gear changes or is it motorway miles?
Do you tend to leave in drive or do you use command shift
have you towed or used off road
do you leave in drive when stopped at lights or do you slip into nuetral / park
do you engage drive while rolling back and vice versa
have your cars been in any accidents
have you had any other electo / mechanical issues on your cars. such as overheating, dodgy electrics etc Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Good poin(s)

1 - Combination. Local journeys of 4-5 miles are usual, with a Motorway round trip of 300miles every 10 days or so.
2 - Drive 99.9999% of the time
3 - Towed, No. Offroad - I would say no, but occasional Muddy tracks / Farm Yard access.
4 - (it OH's) but I imagine it is mainly left in Drive
5 - Can't imagine so.
6 - light bump up the arse from 3rd Party, otherwise no.
7 - Nope.

thats a very good discount for a new box are you sure that you are getting a new box and not a repair as i would expect a new box to cost at least 900.00 pounds to a dealer at cost price from landrover.

also make sure that you are not getting an exchange box in otherwords one that has been recon by the maker rember in most cases when you have a part that is exchange the new part is a re-con unit Thumbs Up rainy-city

Hi, no nothing other than a verbal assurance regarding my refund, I feel yes this is case closed for me, I'm okay with it, cost a second class stamp and I feel they would drag this through the courts for years!!

Hi there,
I've just joined this forum, having been following this thread as a guest for a few weeks now. I specialise as an "indy" for Landrovers in the middle of nowhere, so I get a fairly varied bunch of problems.

I have one associate with an 07 HSE Auto, and have recently pointed him towards the Q106 bulletin whilst he was near the main dealers in Inverness. He has a slightly different issue than reported above, in that he only gets a flare on gearchange after cold starts each day, and these would appear (from his description) to apply mainly in the 1-4 geargroup. Once the transmission has warmed a little, the problem seems to disguise itself.

Needless to say, having had the vehicle reflashed under Q106, no difference has been made, so I'm due to have the car in on Tuesday to pin-down the issue. I intend to report back what I find, as I find it, but I'm curious to know if anyone with gearbox issues as above have had any specific problems with cold transmission oil? Hopefully there will be some indications from the Tx diagnostic codes, such as low solenoid pressures, etc.etc.

I have had two locals asking me about what to watch on Freelander 2 (both intent on buying one) and in both cases I have had to be honest with them and say "Manual box only". I think that one Auto in the Glen is enough!!! The man who makes his living fixing Landrovers will never go hungry.

Hi this sounded just like my 08 plate Freelander. I'd been away and the vehicle had been parked up for about 3 days, it was completely cold and I honestly thought I was "riding the clutch" until I realised I was no longer in my holiday car (manual)!! Yes the problem did ease when it got warmed up. At this point I found out about the Q106 and had it flashed up too, it made a slight difference but was still slipping. It finally went up on ramps and a small amount of oil was drained to check, well it was burnt, hence a new gearbox had to go in and my fight with Landrover began! good luck but if I had my choice again I'd stick to a manual! hope this helps!

I would like to think we (the affected owners) are ramping up a case on LR, and I am submitting various documents etc to support my claim.

I am curious if you would lend a professional opinion to the failiure in your hands too ?

I'll try to contribute whatever I can to help resolve these issues with LR. Looking at some of the other contributions, the technical competence is already excellent. I come into this fray as an engine controls specialist rather than a transmission specialist, so my approach is more likely to be (as Rover & LR used to put it) a "fresh eyes approach". Having said that, I make my living (partly) by just standing back and being analytical, and my only claim to fame is that I have never yet failed to fix any car that arrives on my patch!

My own FL2 job is delayed until tomorrow morning, so I'll have to post what I find in the evening. Unfortunately, the ramps are "occupied" at the moment (FL1 K1.8 oil leak and a howling PG1 'box) so I may be a bit slow with the mechanical feedback (filter/oil/debris/endoscope/etc.) Rolling Eyes The man who makes his living fixing Landrovers will never go hungry.

Well, you bet that helps! I'd sort of resolved myself to doing an oil sample almost immediately tomorrow, as soon as the electrickery had been probed. I don't have the means to get a proper analysis done, which means enough has to be drained-off to get a second opinion by a tribologist. What I hoped to find was indications of burning rather than full-blown clutch break-up (debris, that sort of thing). So your experience is a great help - I never believe in coincidences - and points to a generic issue in the hydraulics control. A generic issue means a good case for class action. Thumbs Up

Sadly for the customer (and close acquaintance of mine), this latest saga with the Auto 'box may well be the last straw for him. From the word go, he has had issues with the transmission on the car. Subsequent issues (after the box was replaced under warranty by main dealer due to complete loss of drive in any gear) were partly associated to damage done by LR taking the 'box out and replacing it, and led to handbrake failure with the rear linings sticking on (damaged cables caused the brakes to not retract properly), overheated brake hardware, and overheated bearings on those wheels. Add the usual MAF meter contamination problems from ingested salt water (due to the dealership not checking the air cleaner box intake trunking integrity during/after service), with all the corresponding hassle prior to final replacement of the meter during the fault-clearing and meter cleaning stages of the diagnosis. The poor guy just wants shot of the car after this. The man who makes his living fixing Landrovers will never go hungry.

Update on FL2 cold autobox slip

Well, exactly as Soobeedoo had experienced. I did the electrical diagnostics as soon as the car came in this morning. Not a happy picture - two faults (one permanent) on sticking solenoids. I'll fill the detail in when I have got the tester uploaded from this car.

Had to wait until later this afternoon to do the oil sample, then found that the 08MY replacement box in this car had a particularly seized integrated level screw in the drain plug. After broaching a T50bit into the screw head (so making sure that future technicians would not struggle), it clicked undone to reveal the worse ATF I have seen in many a year. Expecting to drain a good 250ml of fluid for sending away, I stopped after about 50ml. It just wasn't worth bothering after that! From the glass sample jar, even 5mm thickness of fluid was opaquely black.

The car is basically able to drive as it stands. I'll offer the chap a full flush with the most cost-effective fluid I can source (rather than the correct fluid to be sourced for the final fill and level), but this looks like another brick in the wall for the this sorry thread of AW box failures.
