Jeez... I know you've changed and checked the glowplugs but have you swapped out the glowplug relay/timer? Might be getting a bad signal from ecu? have you plugged a decent diag reader into it to get all the live data as it starts (ie coolant temp, outside temp etc)?

unfortunatly yes to all changed relay checked live date ever metered the back of fuse box to watch relay live and all seem ok Sad

Scraping the barrel now.
The ECU controls the 3 phases of the glow plug heating - its much more advanced than the old fashioned timer/relay.
It appears that the only relevant thing you've not changed is the ECU - has it been messed with , remapped etc ?
Its a wild guess, but could the ECU be faulty ? and would it be possible to try another ECU from somewhere ?

What was the diesel specialists' explanation for the smokey/lumpy starting up? Jules

What millage is the engine on? Also have you had this car for a while running perfect?. And you have fitted a new turbo because the old one was leaking oil? If so was the intercooler and boost pipes checked for excessive oil?.

3 stages of glow is working fun had Ecu tested and all fine and it’s standard Ecu no mapping turbo pipes are fine turbo was changed as this is another engine I had to fit as last engine destroyed by swirl flaps and damaged turbo got another engine and had turbo sorted to use
On the verge of 5 litres of petrol and a match now

Sorry and diesel specialist are stumped to they can’t find any thing wrong at all and once it’s had first start it’s perfect all day but nothing showing up all pressures tempretures
Etc perfect every thing on diesel side changed new even valves and sensors in high pressure pump new pressure rail and valves new injectors even changes fuel line and bread off pipes as have a restrictive in it stumped.com

Just thinking laterally, would it be worth finding a Peugeot MasterTech and getting his advice? Given that the engine was around in their vehicles for longer than before JLR adopting them (2.2HDi Peugeot called them), it could be worth a conversation at least? You never know....they might have seen it loads of times and know the answer on the spot. Worth a punt?

As Jules says scraping the barrel! It would be worth checking the air intake side for blockages/leaks or wrongly fitted parts. Check that the airfilter is ok and the housing isn`t restricted in any way. If all ok there then it might be worth checking the valve timing is as it should be. I mean the timing between the 2 camshafts which are connected by a chain. If the chain has worn it will affect the timing. Other than that I would say that something you have already replaced is faulty and you may have to revisit something that you have already replaced. It s not unknown for a new part to be faulty and just because it is new it should not be discounted as the source of your problem.

+1 for timing. I had this exact problem on a Disco 200 and it turned out to be a sloppy keyway on the crankshaft (yes I know you've checked that). On that occasion it was cured by welding the pulley onto the shaft (well, it was an old car...) Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
