Morning guys sat with the diagnostic this morning to have a look at live data and found a fault code p2297 oxygen sensors out of range on deceleration which made me look at live date of bank 1 and 2 sensor on the cat which where At 88.04c both of them and the car is cold so wonder if this is telling the Ecu fibs

I did it by saving a separate copy of the edited file and using that to upload. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 74k+ miles) (MY2015)

Do we agree its not thick black smoke ? Not pure white (water in bores) More of the blue tinge variety ?

If we can agree on that I come down on the side of oil in the bores not fuel. As gravity comes into play I am back at worn valve stems oil seals or even the valve stems but I would expect a bit of top end clatter if the valves and stems were really bad. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Do diesel engines blow out smoke after slowing down on the over-run when you reapply throttle as petrol cars do with leaky rings and valve seals?
I say this because I'm not sure about manifold pressure in diesel engine or the workings of the throttle plate.

Not sure my question is relavent to this fault as op says he had a satisfactory combustion pressure check. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

We are clutching at straws possibly but you could do a pressure check of the combustion chambers and they could read OK. Turn off the engine, go to bed with oil passing the valve stem seals dropping into said combustion chambers as they are open could they not ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Yes they can. Non-turbo diesels still suck air into the cylinders and therefore still create a negative pressure in the intake manifold but its nothing like a petrol engine as there is no throttle valve. That's why they need a vacuum pump for the brake servo. I'm not sure exactly what the situation is with turbo diesels but they still have a vacuum pump. Jules

That picture is impressive! As I said earlier, it looks exactly like my experience with the Disco 200. I think if it's down to valves/guides then you'll get a fairly short burst of smoke while the pistons clear. It should also happen whether the engine is hot or cold - in fact more oil would bleed in on a hot engine. When I had the timing problem the smoke would happen for a good few hundred yards until everything warmed up. And only happened with a cold engine. I wonder what all that burning oil is doing to the exhaust system. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

May just be valve seals, hot oil runs down the stem when switched off, however it won't be noticeable when running as the amount is less due to the valve close action, though I would have thought that would be unusual. My Daimler V8 engine which never had seals had a tendency to do this but not quite as large smoke screen my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Some older type Petrol engines on overrun (like going down hill and then opening up) would blow blue smoke. I had it on a brand new Fiat in 1981 and valves had to be done.

Your oil usage should point some of this out. Do you top up ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

My wife’s diesel Ford Fiesta does that badly on a cold start each morning. We’ve been told by two different ford dealers it’s most likely one or more worn and leaking fuel injectors.
Her car is very lumpy on start up but fine once it’s got going. It’s a bit lumpy on tickover pulling up at junctions even when warm now. Fuel economy has also taken a hit.
So, possibly leaky injector(s)? Derek Hill

Stem seals

Same here on an xr3i ,valve stem oil seals .it was that common they could be done without taking off the head.
