high pitched squeek from rear

Hey everyone!

Had the car valeted at the LR garage as wasn't done well when picked it up. Good service and excellent valet, but on the way home, noticed a high pitched squeek from the rear. Seemed worse over uneven road. Stopped at service station, opened and closed all doors etc. Drove off and nothing. Not noticed for a few days and then this morning on M-way to work, it started again. Think it is coming from the LHS rear. It seems to go away when I press the brake.
Could this be a bearing? Would you expect a bearing noise to go away completely when you brake?

To check a bearing, do I jack up the car and check for wheel play?

I'm going to take the wheels off tonight and check for crap stuck in it.

Anything else you cn think of for me to check? Confused as to wy it started after the valet

Also, since I got it, the handbrake has occasionally been jammed (discs stuck) in the morning and drives away with a clunk

Thanks for any help you can give

cheers

Nothing to do with the wheel bearings, they would make a low frequency rumble. Sounds to me like the brake pads need removing, cleaning and copper slipped as they are not retracting.

Common fault (not just on LR's) is the brake pad lining separating from the back plate of the pad. Causes a lot of intermittent squealing. Check your brake pads. Cure - replace brake pads. It did my head in for a wee while when I had it and it was very intermittent.

thanks for the replys guys!

Is replacing pads an easy job? And are the parts expensive?
In fact, is it a warranty claim? (i'm in the extra year warranty) Car is 3 1/2 yrs old so doubt it

Thanks again

this is whats been happening to mine - it turns out it seems to be quite a common fault for the rear parking (hand) brake to bind on and cause a squeek/ rumble/ hot wheel... it's not the disc brake pads but the shoes that act on the inside of the disc hub thats machined as a drum. mine needed a new rear disc both sides and a set of shoes on each side. then factor in changing the disc pads as well whislt you're there and it adds up.

mine started with handbrake sticking on and a clunk when driving off.

parts - for the whole axle

rear shoes - 89.99 from lr
rear discs - 64.00 from lr (cheaper than non oe parts from factors)
rear disc pads - 22.00
