Rear subframe rust

Had my car in for a service @ my local specialist & he advised me to treat the rust soon as it’s not looking good with rust especially if I intended keeping the car, he did comment that he is seeing many many younger Land Rovers now with rust problems. Therefore it’s expensive treatment time in the spring 😩😩😩

Yes, a lot of our Freelander's are getting to that stage,
I intend this summer to clean as much as possible and then
start a treatment of Bilt Hamber products,
at my age I'm definitely NOT looking forwards to it, but needs must. Rolling Eyes DAVE.

Got admit it though Dave, as yours is a 2008, she is going to be 14 years old next year.
And you are contemplating rust prevention rather than cutting out rotten sections of the car.

Gone are the days when you were welding sills on Simca's to get them through their first MOT at 3 years old.
Inner wings that were so rotten that they didn't actually meet the outer wing, or headlights falling out on Vauxhall Chevettes because the mud thrown up by the wheels had compacted behind the headlights and rotted the wings. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I don't know if you remember the first Vauxhall Victors, now they grew holes in the wings as they left the sale room, Shocked
It's true cars have come a long way since the rust buckets of the sixties and as you say, mines nearly 14 years down the line
and all I'll be doing is clearing surface rust underneath and retreating,
which is pretty good going as this Freelander has lived on the coast all it's life. Thumbs Up DAVE.

Funny that a Talbot Lotus has emerged just down the road from me, it is a rally version so slightly differently built and coseted from the elements my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

I really look after our 2 freelanders always clean and mechanically spot on but the one thing that really does bug me is the huge amount of surface rust on the underside I’ve tried lots of things over time but unless the underside is treated when it’s bought new it does become very difficult to stop once it starts corroding . When I see the old advert for Freelander wading through deep water I can’t help but think all that water getting into the sills and all the nooks and crannies not to mention inside the brake drums . I was surprised when I bought my first one I expected it to be really well protected underneath and was shocked to see no extra protection on exposed metal components…

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Fuji White

After several years with (Company paid-for Very Happy ) RR Vogues, in 1998 I bought a BMW 530D Touring (The estate). Brilliant, fast and frugal car - when it worked! I ended-up on first-name terms with BMW breakdown guys. Nearly all the issues (breakdown issues) were due to electronics failing. Sensors, mainly.
BUT - at 5 years old the rear tailgate was rusting through, the underneath looked very rusty and the inboard rear disc callipers had rusted solid. At 100k, it was clapped-out, basically. When it worked it was great, but talk about unreliable and expensive. BMW Main Stealers are carnivores! Got shot of it and went FL1 and then FL2. Had no issues at all in 16 years to date other than an injector and rear wheel arch treatment on the '08 TD4 when it was 7 years old. My lovely 14plate SD4 Metro has been outstandingly reliable.
Why do we beat ourselves up here? Look at other make's forums etc and see what a good car the FL2 really is.
Sure, you could go LandCruiser or whatever and get a really bullet-proof long term drive. But v expensive and rather boring.
At least we LR guys get a bit involved with our cars and use them for their designed purposes. Not saying a LandCruiser isn't a great off-roader (it Is), but a rather soul-less bit of kit.
Just sayin' I've decided to stop being a good example and will now just be a terrible warning.....
2008 TD4HSE - gone but much loved.
2014MY SD4 Metropolis - very much loved.

Looking on Advanced Factors website,
I see the RR Evoque rear sub has the same fitments ie. part numbers
as the Freelander list.
assuming their diagrams are correct, then it is possible
the rear subs are interchangeable, Neutral DAVE.

^^^One would need both part numbers to basically confirm this and this sounds about right. Good info!

When I had an issue with a filter in my NA 2008 i6 LR2 pollution control environmental system, the part for the LR2 included three components (environmental filter being one)that would have cost me almost $800Cdn. The Evoque model(I can't remember specifically but I was the OP on a thread on this site that details all the findings at the time) had the exact same filter sold separately for under $100Cdn if memory serves. If it was not for a knowledgeable assistant parts manager , I would have been stuck with a bloody big bill or having to search for a different solution.
