Non Starting i6

I took the battery off to give it a pre winter charge. Refitted and now it wont start.

It goes through all the motions but doesn't crank.

Chimes when the fob is inserted
Steering unlocks
Shifter unlocks
All dash lights come on and go off in the way they do when she starts
Windows all work
Sunroof works
Lights and indicators all work

Two things are different.

Alarm sounds after a minute if i lock the car using the fob
LCD screen in middle of the dash lights up but nothing displayed

GAP IID says BCM lost comms

Feels like an immobiliser issue

Any thoughts? 57 SE i6

Check all battery connections. Record and reset the BCM code. See if it comes back or allows a start. Is the red dash light pattern flashing as normal?

When I first got my i6 after the first day it wouldn’t start at all……thought I’d bought a lemon but after reading some old fault codes with a new/charged battery and reset all fault codes it started first time and remained perfect until we sold it.

The fault I think that caused the non start issue was with the HDC Regards

Mostly,

Take a look at this thread

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic33546-15.html

It looks like you have already completed the basic trouble shooting.

The most likely cause is a failed started motor.

Mine just died one day at about 10 years of age and others have seen similar lifetimes out of their starters.

And I think the UK only had the SI6 for a year or two so your FREEL2 is 13 years old?

Good luck

Paul

PS I would do this first because a failed relay / fuse and a failed solenoid are almost indistinguishable sitting in the drivers seat.

Hi

Thanks for the inputs.

Not sure its a starter issue but thanks for the suggestion. The flexplate and starter were changed about 500 miles ago along with PS pump, aircon pump, and alternator. Ive owned this i6 since new so have a good understanding of its condition. Also the only fault code related to the BCM loosing comms with the PCM.

Im struggling to find out how GAP IID can reset the BCM, does anyone have a walkthrough. 57 SE i6

Not familiar with GAP but it should be as simple as "clear code(s)"?

My TD4 does that. It is in crash mode, or the battery is not recognised and needs to be recognised, its in the handbook.

Yes, I seem to remember my i6 saying something about that, but resetting/removing every code enabled it to start normally again and ran perfectly after. Regards

I've checked fuses, battery, fault codes, and even had the CJB out to check for dry joints.

Still wont start 57 SE i6

When the starter was changed was it a new OEM (or “proper” make) or an exchange or supplied through a garage that repaired it?
Just wondering if the new starter has failed early. Regards

David

Be more specific

How long was the battery disconnected?

I think I read somewhere about the Alarm System (immobilizer if you prefer) having a battery.

If you only disconnected for 24 hours or less then this shouldn't be a problem.

I will check the manual and post again

Good luck

Paul

Change the Fob battery and put the key in for an hour to charge the new one. It says it in the manual somewhere.

Restraints control module is in crash mode, I would suspect. It disconnects the instrument panel by shutting off the CAN-BUS.
