United States 2008 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Tambora Flame

Dave,

That makes more sense.

Thanks for the clarification.

I did know that the flywheel was different for a manual vs. an automatic but I didn't realize how different.

https://akmicorp.com/flywheel-vs-flexplate/

And I had no idea that the Flex Plate was a possible early failure point

https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/foru...acked.html

Now I need more information from #Mostly Harmless

1. How many miles are on your 3.2?

2. Any towing?

3. Any severe off road use?

4. Was the flex plate the original one?

5. Was the transmission ever removed for any reason prior to the Flex Plate failure?

Thanks

Paul

Strictly speaking an automatic has no flywheel, but the weight of the torque converter does much the same job, the flex plate is fitted because, well the name gives it away Very Happy

If there were no flex plate the torque converter should have to a rigid fixing to the crank/engine and in turn a perfect fit on the gearbox 1st motion shaft splines, on production vehicles this would be almost impossible to have no error, so a flex plate give a degree of “slop” or flex.

The clutch plate in a manual transmission gives the same degree of flex between engine and gearbox. Regards

David

Now I need more information from #Mostly Harmless

1. How many miles are on your 3.2?

132000

2. Any towing?

Some but nothing more than 1600kg

3. Any severe off road use?

None, not even light off road

4. Was the flex plate the original one?

Yes

5. Was the transmission ever removed for any reason prior to the Flex Plate failure?

No, and the ring gear on the flexplate failed rather than the plate itself

Hope that helps 57 SE i6

That makes more sense, flex plates usually last forever, but ring gears not so much……was it worn or did it fracture? Regards

David

Thanks for the answers

A few more questions

1. Do you start you engine more than 4 times on a typical day (1. To work 2. To Lunch 3. Back from lunch 4. To Home)?

2. My starter failed at 100K, have you replaced your starter? What brand did you use? When did you replace it?

I don't think that the 3.2 came with Start/Stop if I am wrong about this for the UK market please make that the answer to question 1.

Thanks

Paul

The vehicle is used about twice per week

Starter was replaced at the same time as the flexplate. Genuine LR

Correct, no stop/start 57 SE i6

Mostly Harmless,

Based on that information it looks like you Stater Motor was only used about 1,300 times over the last 13 years.

For the same time period my starter was used about 13,000 times.

Your ring gear failure is very strange. (infant mortality)

I believe that I cycled my starter more than 4,000 times before the warranty ended.

As far as I know Land Rover didn't have a high failure rate for Ring Gear and/or Starter.

One last thought I don't know how old your 3.2 actually is I do know from what I've read here on Freel2 that you have a 57 Plate but that doesn't mean anything to me.

My Freel2 was purchased new and I've owned mine since the Ides of March 2008

Thanks

Paul

I agree, the failure was premature.

While the flexplate was being replaced we also did the following.

Starter
Aircon compressor
Alternator
PS pump
Water pump
Ignition Coils

And a 57 plate in the UK is a vehicle registered in the later part of 2007 or the early part of 2008

From about mid March each year the licence plate will begin with a number relating directly to the year, i.e my E63 AMG is a 15 plate and was registered in May 2015, if it had been registered in September then it would have been a 65 plate.

My new Navara was registered this month and is a 71 plate 57 SE i6
