cam belt change price

morning all

just booked my 2012 sd4 in for a cam belt change £574.00 ; seems reasonable to me ; is that the going rate ? Landrover services in bristol

That's main stealer money. Is that using the LR kit with belt,water pump and tensioner?

Had mine done in July by a LR authorised repairer. £630 (water pump inc) and the A service. Not cheap, but like all LR work comes with a 2 year guarantee on parts and labour. 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

Why garages charge so much for this is beyond me.

Did mine 2 weekends ago. Cost under £100 for a Dayco kit, and took around 2 hours to fit.

This was after repairing the engine, so it needed doing as part of the repair, but I can't see why it's such an expensive job, as it's not difficult or time consuming. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

You’re having a laugh! "Doing it as a part of another repair". Changing the pump, tensioners and belt with everything off, no problem. Doing the job on its own from start to finish is another matter. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Staff wages

None of which is particularly cheap...

That was my understanding. Compared to the PSA 1.9 turbo diesels of old I believe the FL2 is hard work with regard to changing the cambelt. Jules

Cambelt and water pump took me around four hours as took my time.
There is an excellent video on YouTube Nabrach I think? Check spelling tho
Purchased the replacement belt,pulleys,water pump from Euro car parts and changed coolant too, not really a difficult job but just took my time
Any good car spares store hold a cambelt renewal tool to lock the camshaft, crank etc. Enjoyed the challenge and saved myself a fortune
Although an extra cost I replaced the crankshaft pulley bolt, around 4 quid from LR dealer

Overall cost two years ago £320.00 including locking tool and antifreeze
Ordered some replacement skin as a little struggle with starter motor cabling, would have been easier with fuel filter etc removed.

Peace of mind I was able to do work myself saving hundreds of pounds. Peace of mind comes from being in the trade...! And not allowing someone I don’t know tinkering with a cambelt and all that.

It’s surprising what goes on in garages when our pride and joy is out of sight.

I did my cambelt earlier in lockdown. There's nothing particularly difficult about it, though you do need to follow one of the Youtube videos as there's a lot of bits and pieces to remove.

The hardest part, physically, was undoing the crankshaft bolt - it needed an extra long extension bar on the socket and it had to be forcibly wound out the entire length of the thread. I was exhausted after that! The kit I bought came with a new bolt.

Tensioning the pulley is pretty easy, no special tools required.

And the peace of mind you get is knowing that you've done the job properly. If you let someone else do it you have no idea what they've done.

Unfortunately many folk have no choice. I have the skills, knowledge and tools to do it myself having worked in the motor trade all my working life (took early retirement) I live in South London in a nice tree lined street of terraced houses. My options were do it at the kerbside outside my house or pay to have it done. At 61 I think my days or rolling around under cars at the kerb side have gone now. I would love my own garage to play around in but that would mean selling up and moving from the house we have been in for 42 years.

Even if I had the space, I'd have no idea where to start once the bonnet was open, so I'm at the mercy of a garage. Been using an Indy since I bought the car, regular servicing, nice people to deal with so will continue to keep them in business.
