Yes "thehelper", I read your 'old' posts (above) three days ago.

There are many posts on these threads, if only people 'SEARCH' the topic first .......

Quite right largered. We both pointed him in the right direction. I tried to give a constructive plan, becuse he obviously had not seen my previous post on the subject.
Problem is people still will insist on advising a battery disconnect to cure everything. Or else give instructions based on experience from a completely different car.
These spurious answers, although well-intentioned, only serve to fill the forums history making it difficult to search for and find realistic advice from experienced members.

The battery thing is always worth a try though.

One problem is that you didn't offer a procedure for the OP to work with, Largered. If you have had the same experience why not tell him how to open the boot rather just show him a broken mechanism. Once he got the tailgate open he can find the broken mechanism. It fell to someone else to give him the procedure while you just put Censored on everyone for not searching the forum properly or making suggestions you thought were stupid, or came at the problem from a different experience.
Sometimes a search using different terminology yields very different results. Even though I have worked on cars for a long time, Australian names can be different to Brit or US terms. Sometimes I just forget the right name, due to a neurological problem I have.
For example in Australia I'm known as a Censored -stirrer. Not sure what the equivalent Pom or Yank terms are. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Same thing happened to me on my 2008 HSE. With the electrical plug removed the tailgate could then be forced open leaving the lock still locked on to the catch.
I then managed to lever open the plastic mechanism of the lock and spin the motor gears with a screwdriver and the catch opened.
I ordered a new lock from ebay.

Thank you so much for this as I had no idea what part I needed. I'll order the new part and then have a go at it.

Also to all the user's saying about searches. I did search for 'boot closed' or something similar and this thread did not come up. Perhaps I should have used different search terms.

My tuppence worth! Whistle If you have the answer to a question then post it to help the person asking! If you have the answer to the question and post a "use the search function"answer then that's not very forumy! If you think someone is being lazy by not searching then you don`t have to provide an answer at all! The Freel2 forum is "mostly" a very friendly and helpful forum. I hope that it stays that way! The tailgate lock for the FL2 is the same as a Ford Mondeo 4.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Mondeo-Mk4...Sw68Rc6wXf

........ and a third of the price !!! on eBay .....

Remember who designed and built the vehicle. (Ford owned LR during the period)

Good point the Mondeo ones are similar. Be careful though, the ones like on the supplied link may only be a third of the price but they are second hand. A new mondeo copy one is usually around £20.

Calm down my friend. We are on this forum to help each other not to get into petty arguments.
My reply was not a dig at you. I was just pointing out that the cheap ford branded items on ebay, like the one you linked to are used items. Personally I would not save a few pounds by fitting a used component of unknown age or history when a new item is available, even if the new item is an aftermarket copy.
It is also worth noting that, like the even more troublesome bonnet lock, this tailgate lock has been superseded and now has a new part number. I recently changed the bonnet lock and the new one was a far superior design. I would hope that a new tailgate lock would also have been modified to get rid of the original weakness.

My intention is just to give the best information and advice that I can. If you or anyone else wants to fit used parts, ford parts, or even the volvo s40 parts that is up to them.
