Hi all, I have currently got a problem with my 2008 Freelander in that the boot is stuck in the closed position.

I have the warning on the screen that the tailgate is open so the car wont lock with the fob only with the key in the passenger door.

I have tried using the boot open button on the fob but to no avail. I have also tried holding the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously on the dash to no avail. I have had someone press the tailgate open button on the fob whilst I press the handle button and pull at the same time to no avail. I have purchased a new tailgate sensor and plugged it in to no avail. I don't think there is anything jammed in the boot as it was previously locked and this all started when I pressed the tailgate open button on the remote but it did not open but now thinks it is.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

You may have the strap from the boot floor trapped in the lock

Get in the boot with a big pair of pliers 2008 xs
Snorkel
raised axle/gearbox breathers
Mantec tank guard
Cb radio
Blanked EGR
Sump guard
Scratches
Snolkle

Thanks for the tip. I've been out and disconnected the battery so will leave it disconnected for a few hours and try it again.

Disconnecting the battery got rid of the message on the dash but as soon as I pressed the boot release button nothing happened except the message returned on the dash.

I shall look for boot strap tomorrow when it's light but last time I had something stuck in the boot it opened a tiny amount but this isn't open one bit.

This is the problem ......... it needs replacing .

There should be access to the boot latch from the inside of the boot (floor area), fold the seats down and use a small screwdriver to slide the latch and it should open .

With my electronics and electrical engineering background .......... I would approach the problem with experience.

Exactly what I did. I was in the trade for 40 years and a licensed Volvo VECADS technician and Cunmmins Insite. Often you are able to clear a spurious Can bus fault with a reboot. Was just trying to help the bloke  2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

OH NO !!!

The latch is in the tailgate NOT the body floor.

Same thing happened to me on my 2008 HSE. The lock was broken and would not release. I crawled inside and managed to get the large rear plastic panel off the inside of the tailgate. It took some tugging and would only come off at the top and sides as it loops over the lock. But I managed to pull it down enough to unscrew the lock from the tailgate. With the electrical plug removed the tailgate could then be forced open leaving the lock still locked on to the catch.
I then managed to lever open the plastic mechanism of the lock and spin the motor gears with a screwdriver and the catch opened.
I ordered a new lock from ebay.
Whilst waiting I refitted the lock temporarily but left the plug off and also the plastic trim panel. I found that if I short out the two outer pins on the plug, the car sees the tailgate as closed and I can lock the doors.
When the lock arrived I once again unscrewed the the lock from inside, forced open the tailgate, opened the catch with the screwdriver again. Once the new lock was fitted all was well. PS the hardest part was pulling off the plastic trim, closely followed by lining up the fasteners and refitting it. Good luck
