Soundproofing/Deadning

I’ve now owned my MY15 Freelander 2 over 3 years now and I can confidently say I love this car more than the day I picked it up. It has been absolutely faultless. I love the build quality, the way the doors thud closed, the bulky styling, combination of luxury and utilitarianism frankly something LR have lost in their current offerings.
My only criticism which I’ve noticed is on long country runs Whilst the cabin is very quiet there is a noticeable road noise coming from the rear of the cabin. We have some very coarse road surfaces here in Australia and when you combine these with large 235/55 R19 tyres it makes for a lot of road noise which as I said is only coming from the back.
As I’ve done a fair bit of removing interior fittings I can say with 100% assurity that LR went to a lot of effort to soundproof the cabin until they got to the trunk, it’s quite minimal and hence why the intrusion of noise at high speeds.
The tailgate has absolutely nothing in the way of sound deadning and under the spare there is also a large expanse of bare metal which has little vibration or sound deadning.

So after a bit of research and studying on what makes a good solution I’ve decided on fitting some of this product starting with the load area, spefically under the spare and tailgate and will update on the affect.

I had the Conticross Contact UHP which came with the car. They seem to get a fair bit louder with age due to the sipes vanishing. The new Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus tyres I have are much quieter, but they do have the full depth of sipes.

Agree with the sound proofing on the Freelander looks pretty good, as you would know when pulling cables. One could put a 26 AH battery thickness under the carpet of the rear passengers by cutting out a square of foam!

After traveling around Australia, with lots of sound deadening things, mattresses, dooners, pillows, tent, clothes, & tow ropes stuffed inside the spare wheel. Even the fridge covered in layers of sleeping mat foam. I think you may be battling to get the car much quieter.

The metalwork under the rear seat maybe worth doing as it is a large area. The under side of the honeycomb boot floor, but leave off the area where the tyre touches. I have had to pack up the boot floor 7mm inc double sided tape & I remove sections of the carpet I had put in the boot floor for the 255mm tyres to gain clearance.

Under the rear seat outside corners next to the doors there is a good sized gap in there, I keep a handful of emergency toilet rolls in the right hand side through the flap under the seat.

I’ve done a fair bit of research on this and 2 specific materials were mentioned as being poor car sound mitigators - carpet and rubber mats😂.
The secret is to minimise vibration in the large areas by adhering a material such as butyl rubber to cut down the frequency’s at which the metal vibrates and a layer of closed cell foam.

I’m going to leave the area in which the tyre contacts the floor aafree and adhear the sound blanket everywhere else.

I’ve had the tailgate inside cover off whilst I’ve been working on the powered tailgate and have noticed quite a bit more noise at highway speeds and the tailgate cover has no soundproofing at all, so I’m expecting a noticeable improvement. All the reviews of the material have been good. MY15

Get a ream of A4 or A3 paper & masking tape to cut up templates. It is easier to get the paper right adding or subtracting as much as you need, & also stick in place while getting the template the right size. That's what I did for the boot carpet to avoiding cutting in the wrong place.

I find most of the noise on my car is through the gaps between the doors. Door seals are good and correctly fitted. Have a look at any modern premium car and there is a secondary door seal to bridge this gap, I find there make a huge difference to road noise penetration into the cabin.

I wondering if I can steal a set off a new Evoque when they're released 🤣

There is a door seal around the door frame & another seal around the door itself. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

There’s 4 door seals in L359, door, frame, upper frame and sil. Sounds like you have some missing seals?

I’m going to do a template like you suggested to minimise waste and avoid any mistakes 👍 MY15

The mat material arrived today and I must say I’m pretty impressed. Butyl rubber lined with an aluminium sheet and a closed cell foam on top. From all the research I’ve done this is an ideal combination for an effective result all in a single lay product.

Whilst waiting for the mat to arrive I’ve been researching “best practice” and interestingly discovered why the spare tyre well is not covered in NVH matting. The floor in the vehicle is an area all agree is the biggest impact for vehicle noise and the area most attention needs to be spent. The rear floor also but as there is a large heavy spare usually attached to the floor area in the rear this provides an affective NVH damper. This would explain why LR don’t put much matting in the rear. Not a issue for me or Australian spec vehicles as we always get a full size spare but if you don’t you would gain an improvement by just fitting a spare.

So “lightwater” was correct in saying to leave matting free from areas of contact between the tyre and floor but not only for space but for NVH reasons. As my full size spare is a 19” both factors are correct here.

So I’m going to start in the well first and work my way out starting with making a template. MY15

I fitted these sound proofing devices, much cheaper and a lot less hassle.
Extra benefit is that it also quietens mrs ronp down. Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the suggestions🤔 Thumbs Up
Thanks Largered I’ve had an interested look at that thread but I think I won’t go or need to go to that extent.
All the sound deadener Seller’s make you believe you need to cover everything but the science says otherwise.
Stage 1 or butyl liner only needs to be applied to surfaces which naturally due to their design will vibrate at frequency thus generating noise so partial application can make great improvements whilst stage 2 acoustic liner material should be applied as a blanket to absorbs noise in the cabin.
I’ve now completed the spare tyre well.

First step was to make templates of all negative details in the well and cutting the stage 1/butyl liner material to all surfaces that don’t come into contact with the spare. The reason for this is the spare tyre itself acts as a huge NVH absorber by giving the whole spare tyre well panel mass.
Second stage is the “Acustic Liner” which covers the whole area apart from where the tyre contacts the spare tyre well floor.
I was careful to cut the acoustic liner so the tyre forms a seal.
Next steps will be to do the tailgate, followed by both rear luggage area inner liners/covers.

The reason LR don't fit deadening material in the wheel well is that the 24kg spare wheel fitted does the job admirably.
Adding material under and around the spare wheel won't add to this.

I think i'd already mentioned that point but thank you for reading.
As the wheel well is easy accessible seems like a logical place to start. MY15
