I have always understood the test to be a fallacy anyway, the emissions test take place at certain known points in the rev range and the manufacturers set the vehicles up to produce low emissions at these points. With the advent of dynamic mapping what VW have done is really just a natural extension of that, though obviously a step to far.

Maybe this will result in proper testing.

They also said that for political reasons Europe has been driven up the technological cul-de-sac of diesel (especially for small cars). that the rest of the world is dead as far as diesel is concerned and that European manufacturers will eventually have to consider how they respond with petrol engines. The ingenium can be petrol or diesel, it's modular design can be adapted quite readily by all accounts so maybe a V6 petrol could be made fairly quickly, certainly hybrids are coming on line too so I'm sure they will have a plan.

What we need is the manufactures to stop about with diesel and petrol emissions and start concentrating on hydrogen fuel cars as the only emission is water.

I read in the FT recently that JLR products in the USA use the "add blue" system to keep the emissions down. Didn't say which models. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Is it me or has anyone else ever noticed over the last couple of years that in the Auto Express roadtests they put down the actual and claimed CO2 emissions and they are ALWAYS miles apart

For example

Audi A1 Claimed 97g/Km Actual 146g/Km
VW Polo Claimed 107g/km Actual 160g/Km
Seat Ibiza Claimed 116g/Km Actual 187g/Km

Surely within the motoring industry this tampering is a well known fact otherwise why hasn't anyone quizzed the manufacturers before now??

I have not read the whole of this thread so maybe the question has been asked already.

What can VW do to rectify the situation?

If it is just software then why not do it initially, what was the the purpose of cheating?

I undersatand that it was to meet emission requirements but surely that presumed that the basic engine design could not meet those requirements and still give reasonable performance and fuel economy.

So, will the modified software reduce the emissions and by default reduce economy and or performance. Are owners going to be left with a very different car to that which they thought they had purchased.

It seems obvious to me that the requirements of customer expectations and emissions could not be met with these engines , hence the need toi cheat.

So what will the ' modifications ' give tothe customer?

I reckon the value of VW products affected could drop like a stone !

There was a letter in yesterdays Financial Times claiming that the US authorities knew about this back in the early 90's when they discovered that large lorry engines were tuned to beat the system There was a court case brought by the industry based on the fact that the regulations only specified what was required during test conditions and didn't say that emission should be constant in other situations. The Judge ruled against them. The regulators are just as much at fault for letting this happen, a bit like the financial scandals like Enron, LIBOR etc. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
