Think my wife's 58 FL2 TD4 is suffering from the usual rear diff pinion bearing whine related wear. Now covered 86,000 miles from new. Would be its first diff repair. Can now hear it above 20mph. Its gradually got worse over the last 6 months.
I'm taking it to a trusted independent gearbox specialist next week, for him to listed/inspect it. He's quoted £500 for a bearing replacement. Years gaurantee. Is this about the usual cost for this type of repair?

Mine required a xfer box too then within a week a rear wheel bearing which had probably been rumbling but drowned out by the diff noise. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

You mean it needed am haldex box too? I had a front wheel bearing/him chage around 3 years ago now.nl that noise was quite obviously a wheel bearing. This noise not quite the same, but could possibly be a rear wheel bearing. I hope so. Cheaper than a diff repair.
Was all your work done in or out of warrant? My wheel bearing went when I had landrovers select used warranty. Wasn't covered. Now there's a surprise lol
Its also had a throttle body motor. I changed myself.
I hope its not an propshaft related prob, think that could be very expensive. Time will tell. Landy has now gone.

All done under LR extended warranty, rear diff low level repair plus the transfer box (not haldex) which is at the front near gearbox. (they claim that this was over £2k). The car was definitely quieter after the job was done but I was suspicious of another noise which rapidly got worse so I took it back after a couple of weeks (porbably another 1k miles) and this time it was a rear wheel bearing. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Pleased the warranty worked for you. The select used didn't cover my wheel bearing, as it wasn't deemed to be an mot failure
Even though it was noisy.
Ill keep my fingers crossed, wait to see what the gearbox specialist has to say. He's done plenty of other fl2's.

Its surprising what the warranty folk try to get out of by saying its wear and tear worn and torn.

Bit like the old phrase "sealed for life", which might mean a week, who knows??

Update.
I rung LR customer services. Asked it they would contribute to a low lever diff repair. They offered me a 33% contribution if I were to use a LR dealer to do the repair, even with the landy being 7 years old. So I've booked it in. Saved around £100 from the cost of the independent. As I also negotiated 50% off the LR initial diagnostic cost, the confirm the diff bearing issue. Landy has now gone.

What sort of noise does a failing pinion bearing make as mine has clocked 94,000 miles and sounds loud at the rear on the motorway which I put down to tyre noise. When going up a slight incline I get a sort of slight roar.
