Scotland 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black
Brake pad life expectancy

I am getting rear pads changed at upcoming service currently @ 32k miles. Was mentioned they were getting low at MOT and expected as was told at last years service they should be good for approx 10k.

From what I can gather the fronts are much thicker and from a few posts I could find they seem to last 10K longer than rears before needing replacement. Is this what others are finding?

Also trying to gauge how often others are having discs changed, i.e. every second pad change?

Hoping not to get a shock when it's in being serviced.

I did 88000 miles before I sold my last one and still didnt need any pads front or rear.
Then i know someone who can wear a set out in 10000 miles, so depends how you drive.

All depends on the type of driving and your style of driving. Long motorway trips and they will only be used at the end of the motorway. Short, around town trips and you'll be using them at every road junction. Fronts will always wear out quicker than rears as you do 80% of your braking on the front.

Correct on every other car I have ever owned but not on the FL2 ! I am already well into my second set of rear discs and third set of rear pads. Front discs and pads are still the originals but due soon. Others on here have said the same. On the FL2 the front discs and pads are much larger than the rears and so although the fronts are doing more of the braking, the rears wear quicker. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

My rear pads and discs also wore out faster... Second set of discs and pads on rear, originals on front.
About 48k miles now. Rears changed at about 43k miles.

Well- not always true - my BMW 330D gets through rear pads much quicker than the front pads because the rear brakes are used for traction control. Its got oodles of torque (620Nm and 295BHP) and so the traction control comes into play regularly.
It doesnt have a limited slip diff - (you can get them for £2K) and after a some hard driving you can really smell the rear brakes whereas the fronts are just warm. Jules

Perhaps that's my problem then - I'm too old school for all this modern stuff! I was taught that only heavily laden commercial vehicles with load sensing valves suffered excessive rear brake wear. From personal experience, my ratio of changing brakes and discs on the vehicles I work on are probably around 10:1 in favour of fronts. On my own FL that I've had just over two years, fitting discs and pads all round almost from when I first got it, I'd say the fronts have worn around 30% and the rears probably less than 10%. Know this because I've had a long term problem with squeaking and have had them out about half a dozen times for relubing. Rather embarrassingly, it turned out to be the rears that were squeaking, not the front - my wife noticed where the squeak was coming from - I must be going deaf as well as daft! Embarassed

Ill chip in too. Had rear pads replaced as they were 100% worn (!!) but fronts still fine and original at 38k. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

Probably the material the pads are made from is harder on the back so they wear out slower but in the same time they squeak - a characteristic of harder materials...

Well, they were both the same make - Mintex- and they could have been different materials but I eventually cured it - see my last post here. Ooh I could have kicked myself! Embarassed
