Australia 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Zermatt Silver
DIY Freelander Facelift Grille

Hi all, I've seen a few posts about this around the forums so I thought I might share my experience with doing this myself.
A while back a kind fellow in a carpark did me the honour of reversing into my bumper putting a decent sized crack in it. I had read that the facelift bumper bar is a direct fit into the older models, after pricing it up to get a whole new 2nd hand bar vs quotes to rebond and repair the crack, thought eh why not.

Removing the existing one is fairly simple albeit somewhat fiddly particularly with the side bolts around the the wheel well. The guys at PowerfulUK have a great video showing where all the hidden bolts are here:

Remove headlights and follow steps to take out all the bolts, take off the bumper careful to unplug the fog lights and disconnect headlight washers, it'll eventually look like this:

At this point I also just took out the cross member and gave the intercooler a quick clean at the same time because why not.
The only modification to the facelift bumper required was cutting a small 'tongue' piece right in the middle where it slots on top of the radiator, this seems to have changed between models but otherwise a direct fit and all bolt holes line up perfectly!

Fitting it myself saved some labour cost for repainting as they were able to just mask the holes and spray, I was able to take it to a panel beaters afterwards and have the "zermatt silver" matched with the rest of the car. Final result: (spiffy as!)

All in all took me maybe 3 hours (mostly dicking around with the intercooler) and about AU$600 in parts + $300 for the paint job.

Hi Roly

Nice work, good straightforward procedure. But if he reversed into you, why didn't HIS insurance co look after the bills?

He did, we exchanged details but after getting some ideas about how much it would cost (i assume most panel beaters will probably charge insurers even more) I gave the dude a ring, explained it all and offered to fix it myself if he would cover parts and the paintjob rather than go through insurance (likely costs less to him in premiums at the end of the day - the entire exercise didn't cost a whole lot more than the excess on most policies).
