South Africa 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 S Auto Ipanema Sand

I test drove a 2013 Freelander SD4 S auto this week with 30 000 km on the clock to check if it has the same hesitation on accelleration as my 2011 model. It was as smooth as can be. Previously I had been wondering if the hesitation was "a characteristic of the car "as the local LR agent told me.
The hesitation is also in manual mode in first which i haven't used much before.
I disconnected the battery yesterday for 20 min and am trying to drive with heavier accelleration to see if this will repogram the auto box favourably.
Any thoughts?

2011 Freelander 2 SD4 S Auto Barolo Black

Hello,

i have the same problem on my Freelander 2 2011 SD4 with about 30.000km on the clock.
It is the same noise which has been recorded and posted in this thread: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eb3opdnijja8g8k/New%20Recording.m4a

The LR garage has checked the car for logged errors but no errors were found.
The cars software is also up to date.

Sometimes a can feel a little hard shifting between the first - second - third gear.
Does anybody have a hint for this issue?

I can honestly say that my last car never exhibited this issue (MY11 SD4), my new car does it all the time, as have the loan cars I have had, it must be one of those " characteristics" that we are told about.
If I had to make a comparison, despite the noise, the MY13 I now have is a better change and smoother drive.

That sounds just like my 47,000m HSE - a "shush-shush-shsh-shsh-shsh" noise.

It seems to come and go. Normally I drive very sedately and the noise is audible when the radio is off.

However if a drive the car more enthusiastically for a while the noise seems to stop for a few days, then gradually come back.

Had a similar issue with my 07 diesel auto, like someone was yanking on the handbrake during auto box upshifts.
Did this for about 40miles of driving till i could get it home, was going to change oil in the box first as car felt sluggish when booted, thought there was just some slip due to old oil ( car has nearly 80k miles on clock and has been used hard last couple of years)
Forgot about it and jumped in to take the mother in law home, 12 miles later pulled out of a junction and no power, dash board warning saying i had restricted engine performance.
Got car home and hooked up the ipad and diagnostic app and went to the top of the road, boost pressure went max scale at 1.7 bar and could hear dump valve like noise when lifting off the throttle.
Bonnet up and under tray removed had a good poke around, found the little clip just below the red arrow head in the quoted pic had gone and the actuator arm had disconnected.
Rummaged around the magic box of odds and sods in the shed and found a suitable e-clip.
Reconnected everything, went for a test drive and all was good.
Worth checking if anyone experiences similar issues as a replacement clip is under a quid.

Hi FlyingfocRS,

i hope you can help me.
I have the problem that when the engine is warm (half temperature) the upshifts from the automatic are sometimes rough and i can hear the "strange noise".

I was in a LR garage today. They told me that the "noise" is normal and caused of the turbo.
The noise is ok for me but i think the rough shifting is not normal.
They ran diagnosis but no errors were logged.

Can you please give me more details about the root cause you had on your car?
What kind of Clip do you mean?

Sorry, iŽam not a mechanic Smile

Hi FlyingfocRS,

i have zoomed into the picture and i think the clip you mentioned is such a clip?

Is the turbo arm controlled by the electronic device in the in the gray box with the five wires or does this device measure the arm position?

The problem is that my car does not have any errors logged and the rough shifting only appears when the engine is warm.
It feels exactly like you described.
No acceleration and the weird sound before the upshift is executed.

This is the type of clip can't remember the size off the top of my head but if you contact a local turbo repair company they'll be able to help.
http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1915
I used a suitably sized e-clip for just now.
Just type e-clip into a search and you'll see loads of them.
The clip you have pictured is a circlip and would work but isn't as strong. Thumbs Up

Mike

Hi Mike,

thanks a lot.
My car is at the garage now and i will go to them tomorrow.
Then i will drive a few minutes to get the engine warm and try to show the technician that the car/transmission jerks when shifting.

You said "Had a similar issue with my 07 diesel auto, like someone was yanking on the handbrake during auto box upshifts. "
I have the same problem but no faults are logged.

Do you have an idea why i only feel the bad shifting when the car is warm?

Sorry, like i say i did wonder about oil when it first happened to mine as initially there was no performance loss.
The actuator and arm can become sticky and that might have an effect as it could be slow to come off boost during s gear change.
Just posted my findings as there are a few posts about turbo and gear changing issues and this was my experience.

I am having same problems with my 57 HSE. Reduced engine performance etc. I have looked at the Turbo actuator arm and the clip looks to be there but the arm doesn't seem to move. Should you be able to move this manually and if so what direction does it move e.g. pivot around where clip is?

You need to remove the connecting arm first to be able to test for movement, it should move freely.

Access is difficult though, getting that little clip off without it pinging into the distance, or getting it back on without dropping and losing it is not easy. Its not even clear when you have got it back on properly which is why I imagine some have found them to be missing.
