He was probably thinking, "No wonder LPR sold me this cheap! But how can I can't take this back to Leeds? The boys will take the p*** straight off. Oh, I know I'll tell them it's the new 'black' and it really looks smart. If I dont crack a smile, I might get away with it. Now where are my scissors....'

LeakyLandy, I would stick with the brand you know and get a Freelander 2. We have had ours for only 3 weeks or so, but are very pleased with it. They are off your patch, but Sturgess at Liecester were really good to deal with, and they have real cups with saucers! Top book given on our part ex with no need to haggle at all.
Just a point on the Kuga, which I also looked at. All the diesels are equipped with a fuel dosing system, similar to that used by Peugeot and increasingly on Fords. Sirium or eolys, whatever they brand it,is injected into the fuel tank at each fill up. This is to condition the DPF to enable regeneration at lower temperatures. While I can't actually find details of problems with the Kuga, loads of reported problems with smaller Fords and Peugeots make me very wary of buying into that.
