A good garage should advise you of anything that won't last until next service (brakes, tyres, wipers). Dealers may be a bit less helpful as they don't want you to say thanks mate and take it somewhere cheaper! Local Vauxhall dealer sold my wife one non-matching new tyre when they could have advised of the problem and put the spare on.

I changed both front and rear pads myself at 36k. The rears had just about had it although the fronts would have soldiered on for a while. The discs had very slight lipping on them but nothing much. Used genuine LR pads, but wanted them done prior to the next service so I wouldn't have to pay £000's in labour charges and extra VAT!
On an aside to this I changed the pads and discs on my daughters 51 plate fiesta back in September. It had pads/discs only 22000 miles previous, and although the pads were still fine, the discs were absolutely shot to bits!

Mine has just had a service and was told that the front pads may need changing this year, the dealer will give me a bell around August to remind me and see how they are doing.

New discs with first pad change? Stealers!

Just got quoted for new pads and discs form Alto Service, MY11SD4 with 66k kms on it (which is pretty good for first pads) but they tell me the discs have to be replaced too.

So I asked what the measurements were:

Front Pads: 2mm left
Front Discs: 26.03 mm left (apparently minimum is 26mm so they are shot)
Rear Pads: gone (this was why I took it in, making a grinding noise)
Rear Discs: 10.56mm (minimum is 10.0mm but as the pads gone they too have to be replaced they said)

(I won't get into the fact we had our end of warranty service and inspection done 8 weeks ago with a 'brakes fine' remark)

Alto LR Front Discs & Pads: $764
Alto LR Rear Discs & Pads: $723

Bloody Outrageous! rang Graeme Coopers in St Peters

Front Discs & Pads: $491
Rear Discs & Pads: $446

So my question is: Is this a design point that LR have made the brake discs so thin that they only last one set of pads? I'm also used to getting at least 2 sets of pads for a set of rotors. I'd be interested in others experiences? 11MY SE SD4 in Lago Grey just arrived with a free Garmin thrown in! This could be the start of a beautiful relationship (I'm an eternal optimist, and former FL1 owner)!

I have a MY2010 in the UK ; I have well over 40 years experience on servicing and rebuilding cars. I am on 50k miles and replaced the front pads just now and did the rear pads at 36k. The discs are still the originals from when the car was built.
My discs have so little wear that I anticipate a life of 100k miles out if both front and rear discs.

Maybe you are driving in a dustier climate than here in the UK .
