Autos generally wear the pads out quicker as you are less likely to use engine braking. Once had a half hour of moans from a London taxi driver who'd switched to an auto and had to keep getting new pads. There used to be a potential problem when some models did not have servo brakes, as the pad composition is different, but that doesn't apply to Freelanders.
