Serviced Haldex myself now its :censored: oil out

Hello,
In November I serviced the Haldex myself including the filter and oil , I have a 2011 Freelender and it was the generation I could change without the flange getting in the way.

All went well or so I thought, but 6 months later I found large amount of oil of the drive, and looking underneath I saw the area around the Haldex covered in oil (including the back box!) It only seemed to effect the bottom half of the general area, if I put my hand up to where the filter is that area is oil free.

I topped the oil up again which took about another 700mil and same thing happened within a few weeks, did I mess up the service? I tried to get some photos and videos aiming to pin point where it is leaking but its hard to pin point, the general area on the bottom half (like flange, pump etc) is soaking, top half is oil free. I have as a temporary measure pulled the Haldex fuse as I dont want to keep flooding the drive with Haldex oil (plus it will become expensive). Any tips how I can pin point the source, I got the kit of Amazom.

Where could it be leaking to end up spraying the back box, is it really high pressure?

Hi,

I changed the oil, filter, removed and cleaned the pump and had to remove a little silver electronic box to make the job more accessible.

Just wondered if you had taken the haldex off the rear diff to drain the oil - big O ring seals it there.

Well as you've disturbed three things (controller, filter and pump) surely it must be leaking from one of those. Jules

Actually I emptied the existing oil with a syringe before removing the pump. I did consider redoing the work which will hopeful solved it, I can deffo rule out the filter it is dry as a bone up there. Good thinking on the controller, I’ll scuttle back under and take a look when the next oil comes. Cheeers mate

Did you replace the o rings on the pump, fit new filter cap with new o rings? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Hi, good question, I honestly cant recall, although I dont see the ring in the Amazon pictures of the kit I purchase.

I feel like re-doing it to be sure, i'd be happy if its as simple as the pump seal.

I doubt that kit had new seals for the pump.

The JLR "service" only changes the replaceable filter and oil - it doesnt address the pump filter issue at all. Jules

Ahh, interesting, all point to the pump.

Can you tell if one of these O rings is the one for the pump?

Anything else you think should be addressed, like the control plate I see in the picture?

Thank you for the help Jules.

The Haldex pump has 2 replaceable O Rings and they are slightly different sizes.

As per the diagram shown in this kit:

Sadly not the pump seal, or the ECU seal, I think its the ring/seal between the Haldex and the diff. I cleaned it all up and left it running, and a recorded the oil dripping down onto and around the pump. The only thing directly above this is the filer (which is really dry) and the shaft with the black ring on it.

Do these black rings typically fail?

If the big O ring had failed then that Id expect it to be leaking where the haldex is attached to the rear diff

Big O ring goes here
