Not really a tale of woe, many have failed at less than 40,000 miles - so haven't made it to the official second service.
Mines done 111,000 miles and some hard miles at that, was hoping for twice that distance and if the two LR independants that I had taken her to last year (August & November) had diagnosed that the "diesel knock" was actually a leaking injector then it would have been £200 rather than £20k. Leaking injector has caused detonation in the combustion chamber, these tiny explosions have done the damage, doing well over 100mph for extended periods on the autobahn with this leaking injector would not have helped.

That the crank is still good and the timing chain was stretched but not in immediate need of replacement is down to frequent oil changes rather than careful driving, also means that the design should be capable of over 150,000 miles without issue, if serviced every 10,000 miles. There is a new timing chain assembly designed to extend the longevity, but there was nothing wrong with the original design ..... obviously.

Inline crank meaning no balance shafts would have been cheaper and more reliable. Duplex chain would have required less convoluted tensioner arrangement and maybe 250,000 miles between changes - but the engine only just fits (cooling pipe goes through the drivers side engine mount) so the extra width might have been an issue. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

England 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

111kmls ….better than 40k …..so you’ve had some good use out of it…..you can stay à happy DS owner !

Incredible how the injectors & fuel system works…..especially the piezoelectric injectors….being able to turn the fuel on & off ….at tremendous pressure up to 5 times during the firing cycle…..fantastic technology…when it works…..! Which it does for the most part….
I guess with the faulty injector effectively over fueling it would have caused overheating of the piston…..at higher revs / speed there would have been excess oxygen……….bad result….but hopefully back on the road soon……… FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
D2 TD5 HSE Man MY 1999 470kmls….gone 2014 ….lovely engine..chassis rotten
D1 300TDI Man MY 1996 56kmls….gone 1999…D2 much better
Wife’s FL1 1.8P MY 2001 32kmls …gone 2007…has Mini since.

My Fiesta ST has an offset crank - it has several advantages , made possible by modern machining methods.

I think the TD5 was the last proper design…..

The TD5 was the culmination of many years of engine development from a 4 cylinder non-turbo diesel all the way up to a 6 cylinder version (which was cancelled).
TD5 was a great engine once the plastic cylinder head dowel problem was sorted. I liked the centrifugal oil filter, an addition to the cartridge one. Jules

Not without their issues though.
I owned my 2004 Td5 Disco from 30 - 165000 miles.
I had injector loom (common) fuel pressure regulator x2, injector seals and washers, 2x warped exhaust manifolds and a cracked cylinder head during my ownership.
Forgave it all that as it was a lovely engine and a great 5 cylinder warble with cat and centre exhaust box removed! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I was lucky then - 70K miles of trouble free driving with our D2 TD5

Its still going, out there, somewhere. Passed its MOT in Dec 2024 with 213K miles.
I had waxoyled the chassis and underbody which probably helped.
I was fond of this car. I wonder what its been doing all these years.
