I reckon the 1 in 83 includes a lot of cars permanently in garages & back yards. They never actually go on the road. Probably some from older people who have simply stopped driving.

How is that possible?
Aren't there any check of insurance and road tax and mot? and the driver's license?

I'd say put every single one to jail for a minimum of 10 years if they drive without these things in good order. Or confiscate every single item they own, including their home, and let the money go to those who were hit by these people/insurance fund.

just watched a video on youtube about an insurance write off

2009 Jaguar XF, reversed into by a hire van which then drove off, damage to the Jaguar was a scuff on the rear bumper which also popped out its clips to the rear quarter panel, and a smashed rear light cluster.

Car was written off at a value of £4500, or £3100 if the owner bought it back, which he did.

So he got his car back and £3100

cost of repairs - £30 for 2nd hand light cluster and depending on how fussy he was a rear bumper spray for a couple of tiny scuffs.

But his car is now categorised as a write off.

It'll be a Cat N, which is a minor write off for cosmetic damage only. It makes about a 20% drop in a subsequent insurance claim, not exactly the end of the world. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

It’s cheaper and quicker to write it off then repair it. They are not on the hook for hire car charges, no storage fees etc, or the hook if anything happens to the repair further down the line like paint blistering etc. it’s a throw away world.

And they get the scrap value to also help offset the payout. The "breaker" might get a deal!

I got paid out within a month by my insurance.
After four years of ownership, I only lost about 2.5k.

Only recently my legal team have submitted a claim for other losses, such as my insurance excess, so it will be a little while untill fully back to normal.

My dead Freelander 2 ended up at Copart and was sold at auction. I presume a trader bought it as no new V5C has been issued.

I have recently purchased a Hyundai Santa Fe, and very nice it is too. More refined than the Freelander 2, but it is a lot newer.
