Αbout economy

I own a Freelander 2 I6 petrol. Question is what is more economic? Driving in auto or in shift command? Consumption is very high. With 50Lt LPG I make about 320 Km. Fortunately LPG is cheap for the time beeing (0,75euros/lt). So, any opinions?

The last lot of tanks of RON98 in my Si4 all city driving. It would be more if it was RON91. I leave it in auto. It's a heavy car. If one is worried about fuel economy it's the wrong car.

Most of the FREEL2 are Diesel owners.

With the exception of Lightwater with the 2.0T

I did make a post about 3.2 fuel economy and here is the summary.

- keep the RPMs below 2000 and just allow the LR2 to slowly get to speed

- limit top speed to 62 MPH instead of 80 MPH helps a lot

Here is the link if you really want to know more

Quite often on a 30/40/50 MPH road in the right driving conditions,
I'll use command shift just to tease it up a gear,
this will help reduce the revs, but it's
mainly because I can, Cool DAVE.

My i6 runs on LPG, average fill up is 65ltrs giving about 20mpg and 280 miles which is about 450km just using auto, only use manual when towing or off-roading. your getting about 200 miles, 50ltrs is about 11gallons so you get about 18mpg so not much difference, if i cruise on motorways i can get it low 30's Common sense isn't very common.

Across the Nullarbor I have tried 5th or 6th gear for long stretches. It doesn't really make a difference. But I do normally use 6th as it reduces RPM a bit. Like all outback drivers usually sit on about 95kph. The car uses twice the fuel at 140 compared to 90kph.

With a strong tailwind have had down to 7.8L/100km. A strong headwind about 13L/100km. Usually stop for the day as distances are so great & no point burning fuel for no purpose. The car has the aerodynamic finesse of a brick. Corrugated dirt roads I allow 14L/100km so as not to run out in remote areas, even allowing for the additional 50L we carry. We use 98 where we can buy it as it gives longer range. Works out about the same price per km as 91.

City driving is a lot of slowing down speeding up, intersections, start stopping. It's a couple of tonnes you have to get moving each time.

If you have more crap on the car like I do, it adds weight. Wider tyres, all terrain tyres, mud flaps, roof rack etc each add their little bit to fuel consumption.

If all the ducks line up fuel economy is pretty good, but mostly it doesn't happen.

I still like the petrol engine. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Because lpg is cheaper 18mpg is more like 36mpg. Common sense isn't very common.

Sadly they're phasing out LPG in the UK due to , as they put it - "No demand", and so my local garage has had the LPG pumps removed. They are installing charging points, though !
Damn shame as with today's prices I was finally going to get my i6 converted, until I came across the article that said LPG would be gone by 2024.

Indeed LPG as a road vehicle fuel will be declassified in 2024, so after that point it can't be used in a vehicle on the public roads. When we had an LPG curtesy car recently, we had to drive 30 miles to find a petrol station still selling it. Most former LPG pumps had been removed and replaced by additional petrol pumps instead. LPG wasn't half the petrol price either, at 99 Pence PL vs petrol at 169 Pence PL. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

Well at least i will get two more years if i'm lucky, been running lpg for about 25 years.

Local to me there are two Shell stations at 78 pence and three Morrison's at 80 pence. Very Happy Common sense isn't very common.

Light water this is one of the areas that the 3.2 and the 2.0T differ.

The 3.2 has a Low Lift Cam lobe and a High Lift Cam lobe as well as a variable valve timing.

Because of this to get good fuel economy the engine needs to spend most of the time in the Low Lift mode. The ECU won't allow the Low Lift Cam to be used at higher RPMs which is why I recommend keeping the Revs below 2000.

I suspect that the 2.0T will have a similar but not identical fuel consumption profile.

Because of the gearing on the LR2, 2000 RPMs in sixth gear is about 100 KPH.
