i had a spare pair of Alpine 6.5" speakers kicking about so i thought i would upgrade the fronts in my Alpine Branded (actually Philips) XS

Makes a huge difference. I ended up getting a set of speaker adaptor rings that so nearly fitted. I ended up having to drill a couple of new holes

I did Germplus1 - I made a simple loom with some thin spade connectors on one end and then the correct spade connectors for my new speakers on the other - the wire was about 8"

I jammed the thin spade into the original connector and then taped it up. I had to drill a small hole through the speaker adaptor to run the wire through.

A little fiddly but not complicated. I had a cheap spade set from ebay that had all the bits in

In the picture below 2nd left for putting into the existing LR speaker connector and I thing 3rd from the right to connect to my new speakers

You don't need much Dynamat, I used a bit to much of a similar butyl product. I have make a few comments on this.

What you need is foam as thick as possible, layer up where necessary, filling all cavities. Since you are familiar with the doors, start there, it's probably the best place to start any way, to get efficient at installing quickly. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
