The fill plug is a T55 Torx and it will be really tight, lug nut tight in fact.

I’m not sure why this bolt gets so tight but I only tighten mine to about 4 ft * Lbs and when I remove it for the next fluid change it’s tighter than that.

I’ve upgraded mine to a plug with a magnet and a 17 mm hex so that I don’t have to deal with a torx fastener.

One thing to keep in mind you should buy the T40 drain plug and the O ring that it seals.

If you strip out the T40 it can be drilled out and removed with a bolt extractor (ask me how I know)

LR002908 T40 drain bolt (Volvo part number 30713219)

LR000869 O ring for the bolt. (Volvo part number 1233068)

I must admit, I stripped both auto gearbox Torx screws.......the top was very damn tight! When I do my next oil change, I'll swap in a Dimple!

I switched to this one

Having said that the Dimple drain plug magnet is very impressive and an excellent choice

Take care

So finally got round to doing a dump and fill today having had the fluid for 12 months Laughing

Re-reading this thread I followed @alex pescaru's advice on page 5... mine has done 129,000 miles and I've got no idea if the fluid has ever been changed Sad Alex advises that at this mileage it is better do one drop and fill (which changes approx 3 litres of the 7 litre capacity) rather than doing a full flush as this can cause issues.

So I followed the LR tech info:

Drop the fluid.
Add new fluid until it runs out of the drain plug.
Refit level plug then add an additional 500ml.
Run up to 60 degrees then remove level plug and drain any excess.

Have to say, the difference is amazing! Mine had started to have harsh changes and almost clunking into neutral as you came to a stop.. feels much smoother already Thumbs Up

I will do another dump and fill every 2000 miles or so to keep refreshing the fluid thats in there...

Got mine changed by a local gearbox specialist yesterday. 2008 model with 125k on the clock. No evidence that it had ever been changed before but apparently the oil that came out was not bad, still dark red. Perhaps I should have just done.a dump and fill.

Did the trans oil in my 2007 FL2 at 105k. Definitely had never been changed- it was very dark brown!

Drained & refilled 3 times and now going to run it 1000miles & change again.

Gear changes were fine before really, although it did slurr abit on the 2-3 change - which is definitely better now

Fill plug was very tight on mine too !

Now that this post has been online for quite a while I was wondering if anyone has any comments good or bad on different fluids they have used?
I am looking to do a dump fill change on my 2010 FL2 just over 50K mls and looking at the different fluids available at all kinds of prices I came down to :

https://www.smithandallan.com/products/tra...in-warner/

or

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303081766587?_t...%7Ciid%3A1

these will give me the option to do several fills and try to move towards a high percentage of new oil.

I was thinking of the S&A synthetic, but had some slight doubts about mixing with whats in there now, I would like to do the full flush thing with the S&A.
But if you guys have done it with no problems then I feel more reassured and may use the S&A doing three or 4 dumps over a period.[/quote]

Appreciate your replys

I used S & A lubricants in 2019 to change PTU, Rear diff and autobox oils 2 years ago when 40K miles were on the clock.

For the autobox, I exchanged about 90% of the original ATF using using dump & fill , which required 10L of new ATF.

Not done a huge mileage since then (retired + covid), about 10K miles - but had no issues. Jules
