EGR Change - DIY - Done

So, last week I was driving off my housing estate and the FL2 (TD4 2010 with 92,000 miles) got to the first T junction. Tried to pull away and the car moved a bit and then stopped in the middle of the road. Engine still running but could not build revs or move. Luckily i wasn't pulling out on a main road.....
No engine management light. Turned the engine off and restarted fine - drove straight back home!

Checked the codes and had codes P0489 - EGR control - Circuit low and P2196 - Oxygen sensor signal / stuck rich.
Did some research and decided to change the EGR valve.
A total Bit** of a job and made dropping and rebuilding my rear diff seem like an exclusive luxury holiday!

If you decide to try and DIY an EGR valve change, here is my advice:

Follow the LR procedure, but there is no need to drain the coolant (Loss is minimal) or to remove the Oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold (Just be careful not to damage it when you remove the heat shield).
The exhaust gas elbow pipe, between the manifold and the EGR cooler, cannot be re-clamped on the car so mark it up and clamp off the car (If necessary, remove one of the manifold to elbow pipe studs to allow the whole elbow pipe/cooler/ EGR valve unit to go back on).

However, the most important piece of advice is this - Build a platform across the top of the engine wing to wing to support you whilst you work. I had a length of 4 x 2 which was the perfect length and made the project a lot easier.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future. Oh, and lastly, make sure you allow days not hours to DIY this job!

Of course, this may have not sorted my breakdown problem but, with the miles I am on, it was due soon anyway!

Why bother, just blank it off and delete from the ECU... sorted Thumbs Up

The EGR valve does the engine no good at all, it's like inserting a piece of hose pipe up your backside and putting the other end in your mouth then trying to run a marathon, rather unhealthy i'm sure you will agree.

How do you blank it off and delete it from the ECU on later models (eg 2014) ?

My understanding is that these cars cannot be simply blanked of like older ones - is that correct ? Jules

Fit the blanking plate as per the earlier cars then have the EGR deleted from the ECU by a remapper and while you are at it get the mapper to put a stage 1 power upgrade on the car... Same price Thumbs Up
Had ours done 18 months ago and no regrets or EGR hassle/bills plus cleaner engine, win win.
