When they changed the name of our engineering fitters to technicians, hammers became tapometers.

Many moons ago I started my apprenticeship as a fitter, half way through I was "Forced" to do an electrical ONC, and so became a "Technician".

Fitters are not mechanics - they need no knowledge of electrical rubbish.
Mechanics are not fitters - they are unlikely to be making parts from raw materials, as opposed to building assemblies from parts.

Mechanics became Technicians in my mind when cars went from two fuses, a dynamo and hard wired switches, to fuse boxes, multiple relays, and 1000s of yards of wire in a single vehicle.

Just my humble opinion

All three are time-served skilled artisans due the respect they have earned. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

These days you need to put the right pH water in the windscreen reservoir. Then it's heated so the car doesn't spit the dummy! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

There are three basic rules of engineering:

If it moves but shouldn't - Duct tape.

If it doesn't move but should - WD 40.

If it doesn't fit - Use a bigger hammer.

Hammers can be divided into three categories:

Small hammer - technical name - Mer.

Medium hammer - technical name - Manchester Screwdriver.

Large hammer - technical name - Persuader.

"FBH" the workshop name for a persuader, also the initials of the words often used when you hit part of yourself with said tool.
