So unfortunately, the vehicle on offer is a manual - so no option there. It's coming in at 10k, from a dealer with a 1y warranty and I'll be pushing for a free service.

Is the manual so bad/unreliable that I shouldn't consider it? Other than the gearbox, it's the perfect FL2 and the right price.

I would look for a 2013/2014 SD4 Auto. Higher spec the better.

The 19inch wheels are fine, and give a smooth comfortable ride, although this may depend on tyre choice.
The ride in the Freelander is better than my Mercedes CLK on 18inch wheels.

I paid just under 11k for my 2013 HSE Lux last October with 87k miles from a dealer, and prices have not
changed, as similar ones to mine are still advertised mostly at 11-13k.
Cheaper ones are usually accident damaged repaired when you read the descriptions. CAT-N,S etc.

Check the MOT history, and avoid any that have a history of oil leaks on the MOT.

Sooooooo. My twa penneth on this is that in the past I have had Defenders, Rangie's, and Freelnders. Even went over to the dark side once for 2 years with a Wrangler.

After driving an Audi A4 Allroad from new in 2017 for 2.5 years I came back to the fold and bought the best FL2 I could find from the dealer network. Loire Blue Metropolis with Ivory leather, 1 owner, 30k and full JLRSH.

I can honestly say that it was such a driving improvement on the Audi and 1 year later I am still totally in love with my car.

The only detriment is an aged Sat Nav compared to the dual screen Google map capability on the Audi (oh yes, and 15mpg less) , but drive quality, poise, practicality just makes me smile.

I have had a couple of electrical issues sorted under warranty, but hey, it's a Land Rover.

I have taken the decision never to buy another new car and whilst I know the world is turning EV, I will keep my FL2, take trains for business in the new post Covid world and if I ever change, it will be for a top spec classic rangie

I had 2 manual TD4s before the SD4 - the latter is the winner for me.

I had a 330D E91 years ago - many mods. I occasionally miss the opening glass in the tailgate for long objects though. Jules

Think they missed a trick not putting that or split tail gate in FL2 Jules.

JulesK: Yes, an opening rear window would have been great Ive often had to get the trailer out on the road as I couldnt get some single pipe, ladder or plank inside the FL2.
I ended up buying a telescopic ladder. Jules

Hi,
i would take each car on its own merits and buy the best one for your money
if you want an auto but an auto and the SD4 is the "preferred" choice and works well together
But
if you like manuals dont rule them out as they are fine box and not a weak point,
and the clutch is like any other manual yes they need replacing when worn out and at 70k it may be getting close
check the operation and any slipping and check the pedal returns the full travel after each gear change some threads mention clutch pedal sticking
decide what things you like in the car not just HSE but the bits you want Question

Our Manual TD4 GS (did I mention I was biased to a manual Whistle Laughing )
has leather, heated seats, front arm rest, heated front windscreen, aircon and No satnav, hold on thats every thing I wanted Cool

it also had its clutch changed by LR at 50k under warranty

headlights are fine Confused check all the door locks work Shocked lock it walk around and check all ARE locked, unlock and walk back around to check all are UNlocked Rolling Eyes the actuators get lazy

oh and Orkney grey is the Best colour Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

So I'm finally able to view this on Friday...

I get where people are coming from RE the SD4 vs TD4. If I was writing the build-sheet, I would have a HSE SD4 in Red. However, what's on offer is a HSE TD4 in Red - I'm happy with a Manual and 150ps vs 190ps when it comes in at £10k.

Nobody has mentioned any nasty or expensive gotchas with the Manual, so I'm happy to go with it.

Other than the obvious, what should I be checking when test-driving and looking at it. It's unlikely that LR will have serviced the Haldex for example - but I might wait a year and do that.

Check all the doors lock and unlock with the remote key.

Check for noises coming from the rear axle.

Check the same tyre type is fitted across each axle, and not different offside & nearside.

Those are main issues, but same for any car you buy mostly.

Cam belt is 10 year service item or 150k miles, a bit long for my liking and I'll probably do at 7 years. Never heard of any particular issues.

According to my Indy garage the cambelt change is now 7 years or 70,000 miles. Just had mine done along with the haldex service. Cambelt kit(with water pump was£155 and haldex kit with oil was £85. MY 2013 SD GS Auto

Cambelt replacement on SD4 is 10 years or 144,000 miles according to my independent.
