Sorry to hear your problem, but are you sure its the gasket.
You do not mention any oil in water (or vice versa).

Try flushing out cooling system, as it may just be sediment after all the years that the car has been in service.

Don't give up until you have tried all the simple things.

No I haven't quite given up completely, as I said after going out to find it yesterday I sort of thought “billhooks, that’s it, can’t be arsed”. I’ll take a closer look in a week or so when I have cooled down, unlike the car which has already! Rolling Eyes Regards

I am glad to see that you haven't given up.


Remember breaking a head gasket takes a certain type of talent.


I call it "Talent of a misspent youth"


As me how I know.



Remember when you first got your Freel2 it wouldn't start and you fixed it by clearing the codes or something equivalent.

You clearly have the Talents of a misspent youth.

But in this case you were not doing something that might hurt the Freel2, so it unlikely severely broken.

Your Freel2 is counting on you.


The Freel2 is an amazingly safe, reliable vehicle.

With one major flaw - She won't suffer fools.

Dave I've read your posts, that won't be a problem for you.

Better frame of mind yesterday so took a quick look under the hood......topped up the coolant res with about a litre of coolant (less than I’d feared) engine started and ran without misfiring this time, turned off after 30 seconds or so just in case.
Read the fault codes listed below, and suspect it may be more to do with the fans not working correctly.......will check fuses and connector pins later.
After thought.....is there a bleed point for the cooling system of just a top up and check until stable level is achieved?

Fuse fine....big Censored though at 80 amps!........no way could I get my spade hands in to check the modules connectors so leaving them for after the lockdown and will get the car up to my greasy spanner garage.

I am happy about the low idle air control and speed being low, pretty sure that would just be a result of overheating and struggling to keep going.

Had a new error popped up while testing, the dreaded HDC fault, but am sure that’s just a low battery issue, so the cars on trickle charge now for a few days. Regards

Dave,

That is fantastic news.

I am a little surprised that you could exceed the Max temp in about 10 minutes (even with a failed Fan)

Do you have the dual Fan or single Fan?

For my 2008 LR2 I upgraded to a dual Fan from the Volvo S80 when the single fan failed.



As for your question about bleeding:

The system is self bleeding.

Two small bleed tubes are connected to the reservoir.

One is from the Radiator and the other is from the cylinder head.


I would't remove the connection at the head that is above the Alternator. It is prone to leaking if removed.

If you remove the other end of the tube where it connects to the reservoir then you should be able to use a hand held vacuum pump to remove air from the engine.

If you want to do this let me know and I will take some pictures of what I am thinking.


Welcome back.

Don't forget you will need to clean off the Coolant from the engine.

Its not a good electrical insulator

It could have been a bit longer, definitely not more than 20 minutes though thinking about it, and it was a hot day.....it is a one fan system.

Coolant well washed away (I don’t like the smell it leaves, reminds me of old cars which always overheated).

Not much more I can do for now as we are shielding here, looks like it’s going to be The end of Summer before we get out again to be honest.

LR2 is registered SORN for now. Regards

I had to look up SORN.

Over here we use Planned Non Operation which I believe is the equivalent.


Don't give up.

Your Freel2 will be reliable after the repairs.
