Tailgate paint chipped off by bumper

This morning noticed the paint had been chipped off along the bottom edge of the tailgate.
Odd I thought.
But it appears that the tailgate has been hitting the black plastic plastic "protector" as there is a wear make along its length.
The dirt has been acting as sand paper and once the paint was worn through on the the edge it started chipping off.

Anyone else had this problem.

Not sure what to to do about it. Have touched up the chips for now but how to stop the wear ?

Either raise the tailgate or somehow lower the plastic strip and/or bumper . Any ideas ?

Hmmmm there’s a definite gap between them on mine. I would unclip the plastic see it’s all clean underneath and nothing forcing it up. Lip of boot should be easy enough with a good clean down rust killer and paint .

It gets incredibly mucky underneath the plastic so that might be the issue.

Cheers guys

Yes, underneath the plastic strip was a lot of muck which I guess over time lifted it up a few mm - just enough to catch the tailgate without it being obvious.

I took the rear lights out and loosened the 2 screws (1 each side) which allowed me to drop the plastic bumper a tiny amount as the holes were a good bit bigger than the screws. Apart from that there really is no movement to be gained from the bumper. So I put 4 small stainless self tapping screws through the rear of the plastic strip and into the bumper to make sure it wouldnt lift again. You cant see the screws when the tailgate is shut and now there is enough room to make it worthwhile touching up the tailgate edge. Jules

Must have had a minor shunt as there should be quite a gap.

Had that when my car was new. They resprayed the boot. The black plastic wasn't sitting in place properly.

I pull it off after every trip, the amount of crap under there is amazing. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I had that on mine. The dealer got it resprayed and when I picked it up I asked if the boot lid/plastic strip had been adjusted to make sure it didnt happen again and the bodyshop guy assured me it had all been taken care of. Within a month it was chipping again Rolling Eyes . They resprayed the bottom edge again and it's been ok since then.

Seeing as the bumper is non adjustable, the aswer is to slightly raise the tailgate at the hinges I probably live in one of the dustyiest places except the Sahara and and have had no problems on a 2012 HSE. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Had the car from almost new - no shunt that we know,

There is a gap now Ive cleaned out the muck and fastened down the strip so it cant lift. Jules
