steering column locked message while driving

I was a bit worried when the 'steering column locked' message popped up on the dash while I was driving this morning! Although nothing really happened, I was a bit concerned that if I stopped and switched off the ignition, I wouldn't be able to unlock the steering. Turns out that the message disappeared after I had switched the ignition off and did not flash up again.

Has anyone had this happen to them, and does anyone know the cause? -------------------------------------------------------------
