I am guessing this may be a dumb question but here goes anyway:

My Freelander 2 has the 18" wheel options and the spare is a 17", i know the overall diameter is the same but will it give any handling issues with the difference in wheel size / tyres etc. ?

Any advice much appreciated.

All is sound, all is safe with regard to the temporary-use spare!

The list on the LH door (black label, shed load of numbers) quotes 64-00. ECE 64 is the test that relates to temporary spares, part of that is a stability test witnessed by government agencies - I think E11 relates to the UK, so that would be VCA? You'll be ok... as long as you pay heed to the "Don't go over 50MPH" warning.

Plus, you can't go over 30mph or is it 50mph on the spare? 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue..

As far as I can see the spare is a 235/55r17 goodyear wrangler. I assume this is a full tyre. I must be addicted:

Whilst generally considered a full-size wheel tyre, it is still technically a temporary-use spare as it differs from your standard road wheels. I think you may be confusing this with the space-saver type spare - both are considered as temporary-use wheels...

Agreed, i am thinking of space savers which have a limit written on them. I cant see one on this tyre, and assume it would be a full size spare for the 17" wheels. I must be addicted:

If it’s a steel wheel then it’s a temporary you have and which must not be driven over 50kph (30mph) as Frobius mentioned.

If it’s an alloy wheel you have you have been done by your stealer whom should have made sure you got the same type of wheel and tyre size as on your car. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

The only reason for a lower speed limit on a steel spare is the difference in weight between the wheels affects the ABS and stability programmes. The same is true of a 17inch spare on a car with 18 inch wheels as the 17 inch wheel whilst being the same rolling diameter has a different weight to the 18inch, back tomthe dealer and getb the right size spare.

Steel wheels are only meant for getting you to the nearest tyre repair garage anyway.
As we (Norwegian forum members) have two sets of alloy wheels here (16” winter and 18” summer) the only reasonable alternative spare is the crappy 17” steel temporary type. However so far “thank Thor” , I have had no use for it. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Yeah, I asked the sales chap `how come speed warnings on a full size steel spare’?

He said ‘Oh, ignore that it’s just that you are technically supposed to have a matched set on’!

Doesn’t make any sense does it? Maybe it’s a jobsworth in the factory who is still in skinny spare mode? Can’t blame him, keep quiet, there’s enough redundancies at the moment! Also available in Clean.

Some of those comments don’t make sense -
1). They use the same bolts.
2)
3).
4). Can’t save space as it takes up the same room space as a full size wheel

These were all the reasons i got from various source when I got a nail in the side wall of my rear tyre, on a bank holiday with a 200mile journey ahead of me the following day and wanted to make sure the spare was suitable for towing the caravan home, I couldn't even get a proper answer from LRA  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
