2020 Land Rover Defender technology

If you’re used to the previous Defender, you might be taken aback by the sheer amount of technology fitted to the new car. Land Rover has used the 2020 CES show in Las Vegas to showcase some of the car’s features, which include surround-view cameras and dual-eSIM modem connectivity. The latter has never been seen on a car before, and allows the 10-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system to stream music and download app updates at the same time, without a noticeable difference in loading times and system usability.

This technology is always on, thanks to a dedicated auxiliary battery, while the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster use the same operating system as Blackberry smartphones. There’s a new mobile app that you can use to preset the climate control before you get in the car, among other things.

I can't help but wish them luck with this although it's clearly aimed at the Chelsea tractor market where the money is. For me more technology means more things to go wrong and if you are in the middle of Africa you need less not more. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The problem is that with all the regulations relating to clean air, accident performance, mandatory speed limiters w.e.f. 2022

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-...-limiters/

and the like cars get more & more complex with each iteration.

Just remembering how dog slow, rough, polluting and noisy diesels used to be before so much electronic technology was thrown at them Rolling Eyes

My first new diesel was fairly low tech, N Reg, 1.9 litre Peugeot, which produced 67 bhp, but felt like a great deal less!

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 i6 HSE Auto Sumatra Black

My first Diesel was this ex Military 2.5 NAD. Even more basic. Used to run it on a 50/50 mix of diesel and vegetable oil when vegetable oil when it cost about ÂŁ1.29 for 3 litres. The looks I used to get on Asda car park filling up with 30 litres , before topping up with diesel at their petrol station.

We gave our daughter our old BX TZD.....same engine but nicely turbo charged and in a lighter vehicle, she didn’t like the idea at first thinking the car was a bit “old” for her, after the first drive in it she absolutely loved it Laughing Regards

You’re right about the BX being lighter and making a lot of difference, while even the 405 was transformed with a turbocharger Thumbs Up Plus, those wonderful Citroen hydraulics Very Happy
