Cold start limp mode very briefly

Anyone suggest where to look for the cause of this problem on a diesel 2008 model, 106K miles?
After a couple of minutes driving from a cold start the engine suddenly loses power but
only for literaly a second or two. The doors unlock and lock and the red immobiliser light
below the rev counter lights steady for a few seconds. There's a double bleep from the warning
bleeper in the dash.
The fault never occurs from a warm start. New battery and an extra earth strap from the battery
to the engine but still happens. I'm guessing it's an electrical power issue of some kind that's causing
the ECU to glitch, maybe some load gets switched on as part of cold start routine. My basic
fault code reader never reveals any faults before and after.
We've had the car for 8 years, it's been mostly reliable in that time.

No answers so you seem to have everyone stumped! As I start, I would do a hard reset just to rule it out. You never know!
